College/Department Information Welcome to the Department of Ophthalmology at the Medical College of Georgia and Augusta University Health. Our top priority is the provision of thorough and compassionate patient care. Within our department you will find doctors who are interested in matching your concerns with accurate diagnoses and treatments. We seek not only to provide the right treatment, but also to educate you in regard to your condition so that you too may be involved in its management. Our educational mission is broadly focused. Upon completion of the 3 year course of instruction our residents are able to enter comprehensive ophthalmic practice or pursue fellowship training. Through continuing medical education activities the local ophthalmic community as well as our team of eye care providers are given opportunity to discuss and implement recent advances in the medical and surgical care of the eye.'
Job Summary The Research Associate coordinates the activities of trainees and technicians in the laboratory; provides administrative support of research initiatives; performs, plans and executes independent studies; develops and evaluates new research techniques and procedures; ensures compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to use of biohazardous materials and oversees the use of the materials and equipment in the laboratory.
Responsibilities The duties include, but are not limited to:
- Research scientific literature regarding current understanding of experimental paradigms; conduct experiments, analyze results and summarize findings; prepare findings for presentations at national and international meetings, publication and grants
- Coordinate research activities and procedures of staff, graduate and summer students by continuous discussion amongst lab members; participate in project planning and development of research protocols; develop and evaluate new techniques and procedures
- Advise principal investigators, postdoctoral fellows, students and technicians in research techniques and procedures; assist trainees and other technicians with analysis of project data
- Ensure compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to use of biohazardous materials, chemicals, anesthetic drugs and experimental animals; oversee use of materials, equipment, etc.
- Order supplies and equipment; Maintain and trouble shoot equipment; maintain chemical and equipment inventories.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications Master's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in research, basic science or clinical laboratory particularly clinical trial research
OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' research and/or clinical experience.
Preferred Qualifications Experience in the medical field; Experience in medical research to support research for clinical grant studies and clinical trials.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Ability to maintain confidentialityExcellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skillsProficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases
Shift/Salary/Benefits Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required)
Pay Grade: R14
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
