The System Office seeks a Journals Manager for the University of Illinois Press. This position is responsible for the vision, strategy, and financial health of the journals program, which currently includes 43 periodicals, ranging in frequency from 1 to 4 issues per year, and 18 scholarly societies. The journals manager oversees all aspects of the Press's Journals operation: supervising journals staff, retaining/recruiting journals, setting schedules and subscription rates, negotiating with aggregators, and monitoring/enhancing the financial contribution of the Journals program to the Press. The journals manager serves as a member of the Press management team, participating in planning, budgeting, and strategizing with director and other department heads.

Additional responsibilities include:
1. Oversee the editorial, marketing, and fulfillment operations for the journals program. Hire, train, evaluate, mentor, and manage professional and technical staff.
2. Participate actively as a member of the senior management team, helping to establish the priorities, goals, and strategic direction for the Press. Participate in planning, budgeting, and problem solving. Along with the Press director, lead aspects of strategic planning for the Press. Work collaboratively with other managers. Resolve conflicts as needed in a constructive and collegial way.
3. Communicate with the academic editors and the client owners of all journals about matters relating to editorial policy, scheduling, and circulation/financial management and consult as needed.
4. Conduct a financial review for each journal at least annually. Review and update contractual terms for client journals as needed.
5. With the editor-in-chief, pursue a coordinated acquisitions strategy to advance the reputation of the Press in selective fields of strength.
6. Recruit and develop new journal clients. Pursue and cultivate journals partnerships with scholarly organizations and societies. Develop journals projects and relationships with faculty, programs, and units across the UI System.
7. Review and respond to journals publication calls for proposal and other opportunities that advance the goals of the program. Prepare proposals and negotiate contracts.
8. Represent the Press at scholarly conferences and meetings.
9. Report regularly to the Press management group on the directions and performance of the journals program.
10. Engage in professional development initiatives and actively involve Journals staff in appropriate workshops, courses, and conferences as appropriate.
11. Stay current with trends and issues in journals publishing and pursue forward-looking opportunities.
12. Advise university faculty and departments on journals publishing questions.
Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree (BA/BS)
  2. Minimum of two years of managerial experience


Knowledge and Experience:

  1. Experience working with officials of learned societies.
  2. Strong verbal and written communications skills to interact effectively with academic stakeholders.
  3. Strong interpersonal skills that reflect courtesy, diplomacy, and a collaborative approach to develop and maintain effective work relationships.
  4. Practical management skills with personnel and budgeting.
  5. Knowledge of standard accounting procedures.
  6. Ability to work independently and to exercise good judgment and discretion in the performance of all work assignments.
  7. Supervisory, administrative, and decision-making abilities.
  8. Ability to effectively handle stressful, sensitive, and demanding situations and personalities.

  9. Some travel required



Required

  1. Minimum five years relevant experience in scholarly, professional, college, or trade publishing.
