Patient Services and Training Intern II: Division of Fire (2): We will hire two students who will be assigned to work within our Patient Services and Training Divisions. The students will be rotating. between these sections as well as participating in ride-a-longs in ambulances on EMS calls. The rate of pay is $16.00 per hour. Summer internships will start May 13-17, 2024 and end by the start of the fall semester.

Essential Duties Patient Services and Training Intern II: Division of Fire (2): We will hire two students who will be assigned to work within our Patient Services and Training Divisions. The students will be rotating. between these sections as well as participating in ride-a-longs in ambulances on EMS calls. The rate of pay is $16.00 per hour. Summer internships will start May 13-17, 2024 and end by the start of the fall semester.
Desired Area of Study : Emergency Services, Emergency Management, Medicine, Public Policy or Administration, or any program that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Desired GPA: 2.50 or better
Desired Student : Undergraduate level student, rising junior or senior preferred.
Work Hours : M-F, generally split between one or two 10-hour days on the ambulance and half days from 8:30 am 12:30 pm for administrative duties.

Expected Start Date : May 13-17, 2024, depending on the selected student's availability.
Expected End Date : on or by the start of the fall 2024 semester.
Internship Status : This is a paid internship position at the hourly rate of $16.00/hour, up to 29 hours per week.
Attire Requirements : Students will be provided with a shirt. The selected student will need to have BDU pants and steel toe boots/shoes.
The Intern may be a part of a variety of duties to shadow, perform or provide: - Assistance to the Medical Transport Technician Program Manager:
- Program management.
- Developments and improvements for programs
- Special projects
- Other duties assigned.
- Support the work of our EMS Training Staff with:
- Development and delivery of the continuing education program.
- Assisting to develop and review existing EMS policy.
- Address and work on issues of the County's CARE, STAR, and Addiction Task Force teams.
- The students will be rotating between these activities and performing ride-a-longs in ambulances on EMS calls.
The Desired Student should have: - Certification Requirements : Applicant is preferred to have VA EMT certification or must have successfully completed VA EMT course and be eligible for certification testing. Preference to applicants who have served, or currently serve, in an EMS capacity as a volunteer or paid member.
- Basic computer proficiency
- Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of County employees and citizens are integral to the internship.
- Familiar with programs such as: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
- Good organizational skills.
- Attention to detail and the ability to perform independently and follow directions is essential.
- Strong foundational knowledge in a field relevant to internship.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to collect and organize facts/tasks effectively.
Through the course of the internship the student will gain knowledge of: - Daily operations of EMS Training, Patient Services, and Field Operations
- Exposure to EMS Operations and Fire Administration
- Supporting the Mission of a Metro Sized Fire Department
- Daily operations for the Division of Fire
- Careers that exist within the Division of Fire and within local government
Internships are intended to complement the student's academic program so the intern must bring foundational knowledge as well as a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities, clear direction regarding expectations and feedback concerning their performance. Interns will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as broad basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.
Minimum Qualifications Education: Pursuing a college degree in a field relevant to internship or post-secondary vocational/technical training in a trade or craft that is relevant to the internship; GPA of 2.50 or better; prefer a college rising junior or senior year of the relevant degree program.
Experience: Completion of courses in relevant degree or vocational/technical program; relevant job or volunteer experience.
Or: Any equivalent combination education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities relevant to the internship.
