Compensation Overview
The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?
The Travelers Catastrophe Risk Management Group is seeking a Data Scientist or technically minded Actuary to join our Actuarial and Analytics Team. You will be joining a group of dedicated professionals charged with leading Travelers to be in position to successfully endure catastrophic loss from natural and human-made perils. As a data scientist on this team, you will play a pivotal role in leveraging advanced analytics and multivariate modeling techniques to enhance our catastrophe risk management practices.
We are seeking a candidate with a solid analytical base in a statistical, mathematical, actuarial or related quantitative discipline. The individual will have effective self-organizational and time-management skills with the ability to work independently and formulate and execute project objectives in tune with business needs and deadlines. The individual will have the opportunity to provide analytical insights and recommendations to Leadership and Business partners.
What Will You Do?
- Provide thought leadership and execution for statistical analyses
- Communicate analysis, insights, and results to team, peers, business partners, and on an occasional basis to executive level leaders.
- Identify, select, and extract relevant data from various internal and external sources.
- Complete analyses and present recommendations to team members, stakeholders, and Leadership
- Research identified emerging issues related to Actuarial and Analytical functions
- Drive innovation through new tools/technologies and capabilities
- Support our Business Units Consulting and PERILS functions with ad-hoc research and multivariate strategy development
- Create and maintain collaborative relationships with business partners
- Anticipate potential objections and influence senior leaders to adopt a different point of view.
- Partner with teams and leaders to ensure the successful execution of data science strategies.
- Generate ideas and drives consensus; is aware of potential conflicts.
- Broadly and frequently share expertise with the business and/or data science community through discussions, presentations, or peer reviews to improve business outcomes.
- Assist with recruiting, training, and talent assessment efforts.
- Provide guidance and coaching and drive career/technical development for team members.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Collaborate closely with the Actuarial and Analytics team to understand the existing catastrophe risk models and analytics framework.
- Develop and implement advanced multivariate analytics models to enhance the accuracy and reliability of our catastrophe risk assessments.
- Analyze large datasets related to natural and man-made perils to extract meaningful insights that can inform business strategies.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to integrate advanced analytics solutions into existing business processes.
- Stay updated with the latest developments in data science, catastrophe modeling, and risk management to continuously improve our analytical capabilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
- Masters in STEM related field or equivalent
- 5 years of related experience
- Advanced working knowledge of modeling/research/ analytics or actuarial required
- Strong grasp of value creation and business model concepts
- Advanced knowledge of multiple statistical software programs
- Ability to develop advanced models and interpret model results
- Application of advanced statistics underlying data models
- Ability to develop emerging statistical procedures to work
- Advanced knowledge in 2-3 of the following: Regression, Classification, Machine Vision, Natural Language Processing, Deep Learning and Statistical modeling.
What is a Must Have?
- Master's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Decision Sciences, Actuarial Science or related analytical STEM field plus three years of experience, or PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Decision Sciences, Actuarial Science or related analytical STEM field plus zero years of experience, or any suitable and equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Heavy concentration in mathematics, including statistics and programming, business intelligence/analytics, as well as data science tools and research using large data sets. Additional verification of specific coursework will be required.
