Required:
- Five years experience cataloging library resources. Experience can consist of a combination of copy, complex copy, and original cataloging. College education can be substituted for library or research experience on a year for year basis up to three (3) years plus two (2) years of relevant library experience and/or five (5) years of relevant library or research experience.
- Broad knowledge of cataloging and metadata workflows and services.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with national cataloging policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated project management experience and success, with evidence of effective project planning, management, and completion with the ability to meet deadlines and ensure regular workflows.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Supervisory experience.
Preferred:
- Experience with OCLC Connexion.
- Experience with batch manipulation and batch loading MARC records into a library management system.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Library of Congress Subject Headings, Library of Congress Classification Systems, Original Resource Description and Access (RDA), BIBCO, NACO, and SACO.
- Proficiency with the tools and technologies used for processing and managing metadata, especially in bulk (such as MARCEdit, OpenRefine, regular expressions, and FTP clients).
- Experience with the ExLibris Alma or similar library services platform.
- Familiarity with cataloging foreign language materials.
- Experience cataloging special collections materials.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the benefits of diversity and inclusion throughout an organization.

Salary Minimum: $51,334.40 annually depending on qualifications
Primary Function:
The Metadata Specialist Supervisor is primarily responsible for the management and supervision of library assistants in the Cataloging and Metadata Services Department, including direction and assignment of work to those individuals. They partner with curatorial staff in Archives & Special Collections (ASC) and staff at other branch libraries to develop cataloging projects and identify and resolve issues related to the catalog and library metadata. This position also performs copy and complex cataloging.
Assigned Responsibilities:
Supervision (30%)
- Responsible for the training, management, supervision, and performance reviews of the library assistants, as well as any student assistants assigned to them including direction and assignment of work.
- Directs the Electronic Thesis and Dissertation metadata creation and maintenance process.
- Identifies and implements system and policy changes needed to support ASC cataloging projects and workflow.
- Promotes effective communication between staff through scheduling and conducting staff meetings, and resolving conflicts among staff within the department and/or between units and departments.
- Supports library assistants participation in the service area and library-wide meetings and events.
- Facilitates and encourages education and development of library assistants by identifying needs and supporting/providing training, developing documentation and standards for job related tasks, and providing mentorship in helping to develop staff potential.
Cataloging/Metadata (30%)
- Performs complex copy cataloging of complex materials principally from the Archives and Special Collections department; completes cataloging in a variety of formats, and resolves complex cataloging problems involving these rare and special materials.
- Modifies departmental and/or system-wide cataloging practices and procedures to improve efficiency and quality; searches for better ways to effectively achieve end results.
- Using Alma normalization and other software tools, loads and/or changes metadata records in Alma.
- Acts as primary CMD contact for ASC staff on identified cataloging projects and works with the Metadata Management and Outreach Librarian on project goals and documentation.
Project Management & Leadership (25%)
- Serves as a cataloging resource for library assistants in the department for authority work, classification, subject headings, and other cataloging questions.
- Works with Libraries Enterprise System staff to respond to user-submitted bugs or errors and is often a point person for cataloging-related inquiries with staff across the Libraries.
- Leads departmental training, organizing, reviewing, and monitoring of work relating to the writing or review of documentation.
- Serves as point person for training and troubleshooting of shared macros, batch processes, and other cataloging tools not limited to a particular resource type or location.
- Participate in department meetings, committees and/or working groups and interact with other department members to problem-solve, create work procedures, and improve workflow.
- Monitors and evaluates trends and developments relevant to academic libraries, particularly in the area of cataloging and metadata.
- Works with systems staff and other stakeholders to leverage existing and emerging technologies to improve efficiency of metadata workflows.
Service to the Libraries, University, and/or the Community (10%)
- Establish a record of visible active contribution to the Libraries, the institution, and/or the broader community that extends beyond assigned responsibilities.
Professional Development and Contribution (5%)
- Contribute to the advancement of librarianship through visible professional activity, particularly as it contributes to the achievement of library and University objectives. Evidence of such contributions would typically include work in relevant professional or scholarly organizations, publications, and./or evidence of scholarly reflection and output.
- Continually develop expertise and knowledge through ongoing professional development opportunities, including webinars, workshops, and conferences.

The Cataloging, Metadata, and Digitization Services (CMD) department supports the University's mission of learning, research and outreach activities by providing well-aligned, highly functional, and distinctive information, digitization, and discovery services for use by the University and, whenever possible, the global community (e.g., HathiTrust, OCLC, Google, Digital Public Library of America.)
