Job description
We have a unique opportunity available at Wagner! We are looking for a student to join our Tool Room on a part-time basis. This is a role that could eventually lead to full-time employment with Wagner.
The ideal candidate will have base-level knowledge in manual lathe, mill and grinder operation. Our paid tool room apprenticeship provides and opportunity for students to gain practical hands on experience with unique techniques. This apprentice will work alongside our experienced tool makers to design, manufacture and deliver basic* fixtures, tools, jigs and models as per customer requests.
Hours:
OPEN - we are looking for someone to commit 16+ hours per week. Hours will take place between 7:30am-3:30pm. We are open to working with your school schedule.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Follows instructions and learns how to design and construct basic tools, jigs, fixtures, and models for new products or existing products.
- Follows instructions and learns the soft skills needed to work with coworkers of varying skill sets, needs and backgrounds.
- Set up and operate safely, a full range of machine tools including lathes, mills, bandsaws, press break, and grinding equipment.
- Follows instructions to make basic alterations and repairs to tools, jigs, fixtures, models, new products and or existing products for testing, evaluation and or demonstration.
- Works on one to five projects with varying time requirements and due dates.
- Documents processes, techniques, fixtures, and tooling for manufacturing Wagner specific parts using CAD or manual drawings.
- Demonstrates and teaches other employees new skills, processes, and techniques.
- Maintains a clean and safe work area by following clean-up and housekeeping procedures and observing all prescribed safety regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
- Minimum of one half of a year of an accredited trade school classes (one full time semester of basic manual lathe, mill, and grinder operation) or 1.5 years of experience working in a skilled trade (Model Making, Pattern Making, Tool Making or Mold Making).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Safely operates all Tool Room equipment.

- Ability to use Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

- Ability to read and comprehend basic instructions, CAD models, drawings, or diagrams.
- Ability to use basic trade mathematics/geometry together with drawings, specifications, charts, tables, handbook formulas.
- Ability to work extended hours and or varying shifts as requested to maintain adequate coverage during hours of operation.
- Preferred basic Knowledge of Lean and Kaizen methods and practices and standard production safety protocol.
*”basic” will be defined as having one or more of the following:
- Tolerances greater than .0030” and less than .0100” for fit, size and or position
- Sixteen or more hours of work required to complete the assigned project.
- 50% of all assigned projects are solved with a sustainable and workable solution.
