Job Description Summary This is a temporary position (estimated 6.75 hours per week) for about 16 weeks, thoughout tax season.
Established in 1990, the Bentley Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Center (BSLCE) seeks to enhance student learning through academically connected community engagement and co-curricular programs, partnering with our local, national, and international nonprofit community partners to help address important public issues. Guided by Bentley's undergraduate curriculum, the Service-Learning programs provides a service experience that complements student coursework, while developing impactful programs in the community. Guided by Bentley's commitment to ethical leadership, the Civic Engagement programs engage students in nonprofit, social change, equity, social justice, and social entrepreneurship work toward creating sustainable solutions to local, national, and international issues.
The Assistant Director of the VITA program supports the Director in the administration of a community-facing program offered on-site at the BSLCE and remotely. The Assistant Director interacts with Bentley staff, Bentley students, and Waltham community members and community partners. The position requires a person who is professional, able to work independently, highly organized, detail oriented, and committed to community and civic engagement. The Assistant Director also must have a working knowledge of personal taxes and tax filing, exercise good communication skills, and have availability during weekday evenings and weekends during tax season. This is a part-time, temporary position. The Assistant Director is responsible for helping to manage day-to-day VITA operations including, but not limited to, the duties and responsibilities detailed below. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of the VITA program and to the Senior Associate Director of the BSLCE.
Essential Duties:
- Provide administrative and logistical support for the VITA program
- Assist with taxpayer outreach, communicating with and scheduling taxpayers, coordinating and overseeing the taxpayer intake process, and managing taxpayer files
- Help oversee tax site operations, including the intake process, providing quality review for volunteer-prepared returns, and resolving/troubleshooting tax preparation issues with TaxSlayer tax software.
- E-file and transmit returns to the IRS and Massachusetts Department of Revenue after volunteer tax preparation sessions are concluded and taxes approved by the VITA Director.
- Assist in training BSLCE students in site-specific procedures; provide ongoing training and tax updates to volunteers throughout the tax season; help manage students assisting community members with tax returns through the VITA program.
- Maintain organized records of tax returns prepared at the tax sites Update and ensure availability of program materials, including (but not limited to) tax forms, compliance documents, and handbooks.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree required.
- Advanced tax knowledge/certification and minimum 1 - 2 years of experience preparing tax returns required.
- Prior experience with tax preparation and/or VITA programs.
- Proficiency in verbal and written English (Proficiency in another language is a plus).
- Ability to handle sensitive case information with discretion, maintaining client privacy.
- Willingness and ability to travel to Bentley University during tax clinic hours.
- CPA or EA a plus
