Job description

Summary

The ED/SSU RN functions primarily in direct patient care, and demonstrates "competent" clinical practice with a variety of patients. The RN in the ED/SSU works as part of a team with a common goal of offering patient centered, timely care, in a safe and friendly environment. The RN in this position offers individualized compassionate care to emergency department patients, observation patients, and outpatients. The RN acts to initiate immediate care in the absence of a physician, in life threatening situations. The RN pleasantly provides nonjudgmental care for the acutely ill, as well as the non-acute patient. This position requires the ability to perform multiple procedures, utilizing both complex and simple nursing skills. This position requires assisting the physician and other members of the team to provide relationship based patient centered care. The RN provides comfort, both physically and psychologically, to patients, their families, and visitors utilizing the Relationship Based Care Model. Registered nurses shall provide patient specific discharge and follow-up instructions to the patient and family using appropriate language for the patient and family's psychosocial intellect. This position requires the ability to communicate with EMS on a daily basis. The RN must be able to relay appropriate orders from the physician for pre-hospital care in a friendly and respectful manner. The RN in this role works with multiple types of sophisticated equipment and handles various types of patients in a friendly and frequently stressful environment.

Responsibilities

40%* The RN as part of a multidisciplinary team, maintains a friendly customer oriented attitude at all times. It is expected that all team members will work together to provide the best possible care to MyMichigan Health's staff, patients, families, visitors, community members, and any other person that is encountered while representing MyMichigan Health. 30%* Regularly assesses patient's needs and provides skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician's authorized plan of care and accepted standards of evidence based nursing practice. Provides direct patient care including medication administration, treatments, education, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as assigned.


20%* Evaluates effectiveness of treatment plan and makes suggestions or participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care.

10%* The RN is knowledgeable and compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines. The RN maintains knowledge of MyMichigan Health and ED/SSU specific policies and procedures relating to the care provided, guides patient teaching, and maintains professional nursing standards.

Certifications and Licensures

RN - Registered Nurse Required


ENPC - Emerg Nurse Pediatric Course Required Equivalent Experience - Within 12 months of hire or transfer


PALS - Ped Advance Life Support Required Equivalent Experience - Within 12 months of hire or transfer

CPI - Crisis Prevention Intervention Required Equivalent Experience - CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) within 6 months of hire, and annually thereafter.

TNCC - Trauma Nurse Core Course Required Equivalent Experience - Within 12 months of hire or transfer


Required Education

Education: Associates Degree in Nursing required.

Provides for the age specific needs of the population served according to department standards and policies/procedures as evidenced by observation, documentation and peer feedback for the following:
Neonate/Infant - Birth to 1 year
Toddler - 1 to 4 years
Child - 5 to 12 years
Adolescent - 13 to 17 years
Adult - 18 to 64 years
Later Adult - 65 years and older

Documents in an accurate, clear, and concise way that includes pertinent clinical data utilizing both electronic and paper format.
Participates in regulatory surveys.
Participates in the performance improvement activities including but not limited to shared governance system councils and unit council.
Assists with orientation, ongoing competencies, and students.
Maintains knowledge with current trends and professional standards within a specialty.
Demonstrates understanding of role in emergency preparedness procedures.
Will be responsible to work on-call, as scheduled.
All other duties as assigned.


REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of nursing technique as normally acquired through completion of an Associate's Degree in nursing culminating in RN Licensure in the State of Michigan.

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

Mandatory tuberculosis (TB) testing must be done annually.

Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.

Dysthrymthia Interpretation Monitoring (DIM) Certification or comparable cardiac rhythm knowledge required within 12 months of hire or transfer.


Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 30 days of hire or transfer.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification required within 12 months of hire or transfer.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 12 months or hire or transfer.

Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) required within 12 months of hire or transfer.

Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) required within 12 months of hire or transfer.

CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) within 6 months of hire, and annually thereafter.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) Certification

Bachelors in Science of Nursing (BSN)

One year of Emergency Department experience.


PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.


Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.


Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.


Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.


Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.


Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
