Job description

Working under general supervision, the primary responsibility will be preparing samples of soil, plant leaf, plant wood, and animal tissues for processing and analysis. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Prepare samples using drying ovens, cryogenic grinders, freeze dryers, balances, and a preparation line for sample distillation.
Process samples using isotope ratio mass spectrometers, front-end peripherals, elemental and temperature conversion elemental analyzers, and a Gasbench
Assist with basic laboratory and instrument maintenance and ordering supplies.
Maintain laboratory records and inventory.
Assist in developing reports, papers and publications, based on data collected, including preparing graphics.
Assist in training undergraduates on the techniques of sample preparation.
The Cornell Stable Isotope Laboratory (COIL) is a world class analytical facility housed in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The primary mission of COIL is to support Cornell researchers and students through sample preparation and analyses of stable light isotopes of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and hydrogen and the development of methodologies related to the analysis of stable isotopes. Secondly, we support sample analysis for external users from other academic institutions and government agencies such as the United States Geological Survey and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Required Qualifications
Formal training beyond a high school diploma of six months to a year; less than six months previous laboratory experience in the area of Biology or Chemistry.
Must be able to lift 20 - 50 lbs.
Must be willing to learn new laboratory skills.
Ability to work alone on regular tasks, based on a solid understanding of basic protocols and objectives of COIL.
Must be personable, flexible, and possess excellent organizational and communication skills. Must take pride in their work.
Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
Visual concentration, attention to detail and manual dexterity are all required. Must be able to perform repetitive work (i.e. sample processing) with a high degree of concentration and attention to detail.
Comfortable working alone as well as in a team environment to accomplish required tasks.
Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
Must exercise sound and ethical judgement when acting on behalf of Cornell University.
Must be able to work 2-3 hours on most weekends.

Preferred Qualifications
At least six months experience; experience with an elemental analyzer and/or mass spectrometer.
Research Support (45%)
Process samples and prepare for analysis.
Prepare samples using drying ovens, cryogenic grinders, freeze dryers, balances, and a preparation line for sample distillation.
Homogenize or extract samples and prepare into capsules for analysis.
Process samples using isotope ratio mass spectrometers (IRMS), front-end peripherals, including elemental analyzers (EA), temperature conversion elemental analyzers (TC/EA), and a Gasbench. Equipment will be used with direct supervision.
Assist in instructing undergraduate students in sample preparation.
Laboratory Duties (30%)
Assist in the overall maintenance of the laboratory including ordering supplies, assuring efficient use of materials, and assisting in keeping the laboratory organized.
Maintain records of the biological materials used in the laboratory.
Assist in developing reports, papers and publications, based on data collected, including preparing graphics.
Maintain laboratory records and inventory. Record procedures and results of experiments in notebooks and electronically using computers.
Assist with basic daily instrument maintenance such as removing processed sample accumulation from the elemental analyzer.
Record Keeping and Data (10%)
Keep detailed and accurate records of experimental activities and the data accumulated.
Utilize software such as Excel for the summary of results and preparation of tables.
Prepare graphs of the data as required.
Prepare preliminary written reports of the experiments conducted and the results generated.
Safety Requirements (5%)
Maintain a safe working environment to ensure that all protocols and procedures adhere to safety requirements.
Train and orient new employees on safety issues as well as laboratory protocols.
Direction and training are provided by the Cornell Office of Occupational & Environmental Health in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences.
Professional Development and Instruction (5%)
Attend training and expansion of skills through participation in job-related courses, seminars and workshops.
Seek out and attend educational seminars and training; attend meetings as required.
Continuously maintain all required educational and position qualifications to fulfill job requirements.
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
This is a part-time position at 30 hours per week.
