Job description
JOB SUMMARY
The GIS Technician is responsible for a wide variety of tasks supporting the collection, maintenance and manipulation of data within the Company’s GIS applications. This position works under the direct supervision of the Engineering Business Analyst and works in coordination with the GIS Administrator to support engineering functions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
GIS Support:
In conjunction with the Project Team Leader and GIS Administrator, coordinate with members of the Engineering staff to collect and record information needed to support GIS efforts.
- Use ESRI software to enter and maintain relevant data in a timely and complete manner.
- Enter, update and maintain spatial and attribute data from GPS, sketches, and plans
- Enter and confirm that pertinent attribute data is included on a timely basis.
- Communicate with field personnel to correct/update data as needed
- Review quality of GIS data on an ongoing basis, identify and research questionable information and revise as appropriate.
- Create print and web maps for engineers, administrators, and field staff
- Review completed work with Engineering Construction Manager to ensure accuracy of information.
- Support the document retention policy by assistance with the maintenance of records.
- Assist with collection of GPS data in the field
- Support training of GPS equipment
- Support training of GIS software and web applications as needed.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
- Provide general administrative support to engineering staff
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The majority of this individual’s time will be spent in the office or outdoor areas around water mains. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. This role occasionally uses GPS equipment, as well as PPE such as hard hats and reflective vests.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are generally Monday through Friday. Working hours may vary on occasion.
TRAVEL:
Travel is frequent and primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area travel may be necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Associates Degree in Geography, GIS, Engineering, other related field or GIS certificate and demonstrated coursework and experience.

Experience:
GIS Technician I
- 1 – 3 years of experience at a technician level.
- Basic understanding of ESRI data types, structures, cartographic principles, and map projections.
GIS Technician II
- 3 – 5 years of experience as a GIS technician.
- Extensive knowledge of ESRI data types, structures, map projections, cartographic principles, and application.
Skills
GIS Technician I
- Formal Technical Skills: Requires extensive knowledge of a distinct trade or technical function. Know policies and procedures and can recommend a course of action based upon these guidelines, modifying existing methods, procedures or forms as necessary. May work with software applications and retrieval of data.
- Proficient in ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro
- Experience authoring web maps and apps in ArcGIS Online or Portal a plus
- Experience with SQL, Python, and/or Arcade a plus
- Basic understanding of data types, structures, cartographic principles, and map projections.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
- Solid organizational and detail-orientation skills.
- Solid trouble shooting skills.
GIS Technician II
- Strong in ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online or Portal
- Solid understanding of authoring web maps and apps in ArcGIS Online or Portal
- Basic understanding of SQL, Python, and/or Arcade a plus
- Extensive knowledge of data types, structures, map projections, cartographic principles
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and detail-orientation skills.
- Strong trouble shooting skills.
Abilities
