Position Summary Under the direction of the Director of Student Services, the District Lead Nurse is responsible for overseeing the individual health needs of students; implementing healthcare plans directed by physicians; ensuring district healthcare practices comply with the laws relating to student health issues; providing appropriate immediate care for ill, medically fragile and injured students; and serving as a health care resource to teachers, staff, and administrators; conducting mandated health screenings and identifying health problems for referral to appropriate parties for proper follow-up treatment.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Duties are to be performed in accordance with the standards of professional school nurse practice, district/state board of education policies and procedures, and Illinois State law regarding nursing practice. Administration: - Prepares a variety of reports
- Provides reimbursement data to the State
- Follows District guidelines on administering medication and manages emergency protocols
- Reports students with contagious diseases to local public health authorities to minimize infection and comply with the law
- Follows health protocols and procedures, maintains up-to-date health records, and has the Lead nurses' office efficiently organized.
- Assists with OSHA guidelines in the health field
Clinical Practice: - Develop forms by State laws and district policies that align with Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) guidance for consistency in nursing practices districtwide
- Monitors student immunization records, oversees building nurses with State compliance
- Manages nursing coverage district-wide and for medically fragile students
- Identifies health problems and makes referrals for diagnosis and treatment and monitors the effectiveness of medication given to students
- Provides and delegates direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency staff care to students and staff, including nursing assessment
- Develops a medication protocol to safely store, administer, document, and maintain accurate medical records to assure compliance with state mandates
- Manages and coordinates clinics for shots, physicals, hearing and vision screening, including
Immunizations, physical examinations, vision, dental and medical conditions - Conducts individual assessment of student needs and makes educational modifications providing follow-ups and evaluations
- Point of contact for flu shots, GKAS, Head Start outside health agencies
- Makes appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter
.Supervision: - Create and administer nurse competencies for each nurse on essential tasks required across the district
- Evaluates the performance of district nurses and other healthcare providers
- Identifies infractions that violate nurse practice and reports to building administrators, and applies the appropriate disciplinary actions when necessary
- Manages the interview and selection process for nurses
- Monitors nursing attendance to assist in sub-coverage
- Coordinates the student nurses' clinical rotation
Teaching/Training: - Keep nurses up-to-date with current trends and in line with best practice guidelines from the Association of School Nurses.
- Conducts health-related classroom instruction and ensures that all nurses have the appropriate training in areas of critical importance/mandatory training
- Provides staff in-service programs on health topics, including blood-borne
pathogens, CPR Certification Training, the district exposure plan, allergy response, seizure emergencies, diabetes management, asthma, and other health conditions that may impact the school community. Communications: - Maintains communication with RNs, administrators, teachers, and other school
personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action, which will meet the health and safety needs of children - Initiates contact with/and acts as a liaison between the home, school, community
health agencies and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community - Collaborates with other school personnel to develop services for students and maintains positive and productive relationships with colleagues
- Have mandatory meetings with the nurses at least quarterly to clarify expectations for each quarter (i.e., having guest speakers and refreshers on vital restorative practices and legal updates).
Special Education - Provides case management of assigned 504 plans and communicates accommodations to staff
- Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the identification,
evaluation, and placement of students into the Individual Problem Solving process (IPS/RTI), 504 plan, and/or Special Education programs - Participates as a member of the building SAT/SST team
- Writes the health component of the Individual Education Plan as indicated for nurses awaiting appropriate certification
- Recommends modifications of the school program for students who require
accommodations due to a health deficit - Develops, implements, and maintains current health care plans for students who
need special nursing interventions during the school day Professional Development - Participates as a member of her professional school nursing and education
organizations and utilizes continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge in both nursing and education fields. - Contributes as a member of the faculty on district committees and association
Activities - As a member of the faculty, participates in district committees and association activities
- Participates as an active member of the school community, representing
health/wellness. - Aligns IEP Designee and Vision and Hearing Training for all qualified district nurses.
Create and maintain a health webpage on the district's website that provides information: - On health in a school setting
- Reminders to parents on upcoming events as well as deadlines for shots, physicals, dental and vision exams
- Links to legal rulings regarding school health
- District's policies on various health issues and how they are handled
- To promote transparency and consistency, ensure that all health-related forms are available for printing
Required Education: - BSN baccalaureate degree Licensed as a registered professional nurse in Illinois
- Professional Educator License (PEL) with endorsement in School Nursing
- Master's Degree (preferred)
Certifications and Licenses: - Illinois Type 73 Pupil Personnel Services Certificate
- Illinois Registered Nurse Licensure
- Professional Educator License (PEL)
- Illinois certification as a Vision and Hearing Screening technician
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/AED program completion
Required Experience/ Qualifications - Registered Nurse with IEP/504 designation
- Four years of experience as a nurse
- One year experience in a lead or supervisory role
- Prior professional nursing experience, preferably pediatric, adolescent, community, or
Mental health nursing and health program management - Experience working and interacting with people/children of diverse backgrounds
- Computer literacy and competency in the use of existing technology
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Knowledge of child and adolescent health/development
- Demonstrates medical knowledge and skill in nursing techniques
- Understanding of health standards and hazardous methods of industrial cleaning
- Computer skills....Google Docs or Microsoft Office
