COMPANY SUMMARY:
The organization specializes in logistics and transportation services for fortune 500 companies.
POSITION SUMMARY:The primary function of the Director of Transportation is to assist the CEO with the transportation-related responsibilities of the organization, along with leading and developing the transportation teams.
The Director of Transportation will be highly skilled at problem-solving, developing operational efficiencies, and operational capacity planning. They will have excellent leadership abilities, with an emphasis on mentoring, training, developing, and scaling the transportation team. This team member will coordinate transportation scheduling, manage escalations, lead special projects, and process improvement initiatives.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY-
OPERATIONAL LEADERSHIP:
- Manage the daily functions of the transportation team, including accountability to processes, deliverables, and responsibilities.
- Track department’s KPIs and provide performance reporting to CEO.
- Manage the scheduling, coordination and tracking of transportation related jobs across the country, being mindful of ways to improve efficiencies.
- Lead in the creating and developing of 1099 drivers in strategic locations.
- Assist in all aspects of transportation operations as needed, including overseeing driver communication, driver training, dispatching, etc.
- Act as point of escalation for any 1099 driver-related issues, handling terminations and offboarding of team members as needed.
- Lead special projects, for example, selecting and implementing a more robust CRM system and Driver and Asset tracking initiatives.
- Work cross-functionally with other department heads and CEO to identify and evaluate areas for team integration and optimization.
TALENT AND TEAM DEVELOPMENT:
- Take ownership of the planning, structuring, and execution of the transportation team’s growth and development, providing regular feedback and ongoing training opportunities.
- Determine HR needs and manage the evaluation, recruitment, and onboarding process, specifically scaling the team to include additional driver dispatchers, moves coordinators, brokers, administrative staff, and Compliance and Safety management.
- Work to build out the driver network and constantly review future job forecasting to create driver networks in strategic locations.
- Empower the transportation team, ensuring that all activities add value to the organization and strive for improved client solutions and sustainable revenue growth.
- Lead by example, maintaining a growth mindset in the transportation function with a focus on efficiency, effectiveness, and business planning.
OPTIMIZATION AND MANAGEMENT:
- Develop processes, procedures, teams, and tools that are scalable to 10x levels.
- Contribute to leadership meetings, bringing operational expertise and direction.
- Report to the CEO, providing regular team updates, transparency, recommendations, and operational strategy to support the company’s vision.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS
- Bachelor’s degree in business management, supply chain management, or related field; MBA strongly preferred but not required.
- 5+ years in operations leadership roles, preferably in logistics, dispatching, supply chain, etc.
- Experience with process/procedure improvement, creation, implementation, and scalability.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (including advanced skills in Excel) and CRM systems.
