Departmental Overview The California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences - Central (QB3-C) promotes innovation and entrepreneurship in biosciences within the State of California. It is a cooperative effort between the state of California, private industry, venture capital, and the University of California campuses at Berkeley, San Francisco, and Santa Cruz. To stimulate discovery at the intersection of the physical and biological sciences, QB3-C promotes multidisciplinary research at world-class facilities including the Bakar Labs incubator at UC Berkeley, creates innovative educational programs, and fosters industry partnerships in the areas of health, energy, and the environment.

Responsibilities Strategic Collaboration Development:
- Identify key external industry partners and build relationships to provide science and technology innovation opportunities to the campus community (researchers, students, faculty, etc.). In particular, Bakar-affiliated programs at UC Berkeley in the areas of: complex scientific research, academic projects, startup ventures, internships and professional growth development, and proactively fostering additional growth opportunities.
- Establish key relationships with scientific collaborators across other universities, particularly with Bakar-affiliated programs at UCSF, focusing on expanding applied research and curricula to elevate the impact of Berkeley as a leader in the startup venture innovation space.
- Develop new collaborations between industry partners, incubators, and venture capitalists, to support Berkeley and UCSF start-up teams with commercialization of their research.
Bringing Academic Research to Commercialization:
- Bridge scientific and technology platforms and design a symposia series to be held at Bakar Labs that focuses on synergizing cutting-edge scientific research with the early-stage biotechnology ecosystem in areas of strategic interest to QB3.
- Partner with university faculty and researchers to identify innovative scientific research projects that are well-suited for commercialization in biotechnology.
- Manage programming and support for Berkeley researchers interested in commercializing scientific findings (e.g., optimizing experimental strategy and securing early funding).
- Ensure continued expertise in novel areas of biotechnology research and existing and future market trends.
- Maintain timely knowledge of current scientific literature, attend scientific talks/conferences, and meet with experts across the biotechnology sector.
- Design, organize, and lead new climate technology education and mentorship programs to help educate campus researchers on opportunities in climate technology.
- Develop programming to facilitate novel startup formation that leads to commercialization in climate technology.
Innovation Ecosystem Management:
- Manage and foster scientific partnerships across the UC Berkeley/UCSF entrepreneurship ecosystem and industry to support the development, implementation, and continued success of new programs and processes.
- Serve as the lead contact for partners working within the ecosystem.
- Participate in regular team meetings that support and ensure the successful reach of Berkeley innovation.
Professional Development:
- Maintain currency and expertise in scientific field.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications - Scientific program planning and advanced project management.
Education/Training:
- PhD in biological sciences or related area and /or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience advising early-stage founders, including guiding scientific strategy and landscaping market need as well as designing and organizing scientific conferences.
- Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
- Excellent collaboration skills, with a track record of working collaboratively with faculty, students, and academic teams.
- Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with company managers and teams.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $100,000.00 - $150,000.00.
- This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is exempt and paid monthly.
