Job description
Congressional School seeks a Visual Arts Teacher for Preschool - 4th Grade students for the 2024-2025 academic year. The position is a full time, salaried position, with hours 7:45am - 3:45pm. This position reports to the Director of Early Childhood & Primary School.
The Visual Arts Teacher is responsible for creating and delivering an innovative art curriculum for students in grades Preschool to Fourth Grade. The Visual Arts Teacher uses a creative, multi-media approach so students learn and continue to display creative expression in many ways and engage in projects that connect art to other topics being explored in the classroom. The Visual Arts Teacher will curate public exhibitions of student work and lead the development of art curriculum and instruction following contemporary best practices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide instruction that enables students to understand and develop an appreciation of process as well as the ability to make informed judgments in the creation of their own work
- Incorporate contemporary and historical artists and artworks into curriculum, and make relevant connections to students and their work
- Create a developmentally appropriate, positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment
- Prepare and implement art lessons for grades that educate students on the use of a broad number of artistic materials and tools.
- Provide a variety of learning experiences, balancing teacher-led and student-directed learning in the visual arts.
- Plan and present physical and digital art displays and exhibitions of student work for the school and community in hallways, lobbies and other creative spaces
- Provide artistic support for special projects and events, including but not limited to the Primary School Musical
- Listen and respond to student and parent concerns in a responsible, constructive and resourceful manner
- Actively participate on the Arts Academic Team and other committees as assigned
- Attend regular Faculty meetings which include but are not limited to grade level meetings, division meetings, and full faculty meetings
- Actively support the school philosophy, community, and policies
- Perform other duties as required
REQUIREMENTS
The Visual Arts Teacher should be a person who is organized, actively engages in the school community and who will work collaboratively with teachers in the division to deliver a well rounded, creative and fun curriculum.
- Bachelor's or Masters's degree in art education, or a related fine arts/design field.
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching elementary school art education in an elementary classroom, preferably in an independent school
- Deep knowledge of a variety of art-making tools and techniques, and ability to communicate these to students
- Positive attitude and eagerness to work collaboratively with peers and colleagues in developing curriculum and planning for instruction
- Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse and inclusive environment
- Proficiency in various technology platforms including Google applications
- Strong initiative and organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Warmth, creativity, compassion, and a growth mindset
