Departmental Overview The Henry Wheeler Center for Emerging & Neglected Diseases (CEND) was established as a multi-disciplinary research unit in 2008, with the support of a generous donation by Henry H. 'Sam' Wheeler, Jr. The mission of CEND is to help the University of California, Berkeley make innovative and substantial contributions to the global response to emerging and neglected infectious diseases. We at CEND believe that by educating potential innovators, connecting researchers from diverse disciplines, and investing in research, we can help the best and brightest minds at UC Berkeley access the resources they need to make meaningful and innovative contributions to our scientific understanding and ability to combat emerging and neglected diseases. Position Summary We are seeking a motivated and reliable Staff Research Associate for the Drug Discovery Center within the Center for Emerging and Neglected Diseases at UC Berkeley. We are looking for a candidate who would like to make a difference by using cutting edge scientific approaches to work on areas neglected by for-profit systems. Our center conducts high-throughput screens to discover potential new therapeutics and tool compounds for research, often in collaboration with other faculty members. The candidate will be conducting assay development and execute assays on fully and semi-automated robotic systems, including preparation of reagents, quality control, supervision of workflows and preparation of assay reports and visualization, as well as data analysis in collaboration with supervisor. The Staff Research Associate will also be responsible for preventative maintenance and initial troubleshooting of systems, with assistance from senior staff. The Staff Research Associate will also assist with other projects at the Center for Emerging and Neglected Diseases as needed, including administrative work on several programs, and analytic work for data science. The candidate will conduct computational analyses in Python and R, and assist with data science projects for the Center of Emerging and Neglected Diseases. This can include data wrangling, cleaning and normalizing datasets, and preparing visualizations and statistical analyses with guidance from the supervisor.
