Position Description

The Coastal Science and Policy Program (CSP) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) is an interdisciplinary, solution-oriented program focused on coastal resilience; conservation; fisheries and aquaculture; innovation; and justice, equity, diversity and inclusion. We train highly diverse cohorts of rising leaders in coastal sustainability through a two-year MS degree in which each student works one year in a real-world setting with a partner organization to advance a solution; and a PhD designated emphasis. The CSP program is a hub for coastal innovation, hosting the Blue Pioneers Program accelerator and offering the nations first Hacking for Oceans course. The program also leads and coordinates research collaborations among academic, government, non-profit and private organizations, including the City of Santa Cruz and the Monterey Area Research Institution's Network for Education (MARINE).

The Coastal Science and Policy program at University of California Santa Cruz invites applications for a part-time, fiscal-year Associate Professor of Practice (which falls under the Adjunct Professor title series). Candidates should be currently working at a non-profit, government, and/or community organization focused on one or more coastal science and policy issues. We seek candidates who are adept at bringing interdisciplinary science to bear on practical solutions to coastal challenges and thus are capable of serving as role models for the kinds of practitioner, non-academic career paths and leadership that the CSP curriculum equips students to pursue.

Under the direction of the Director of the Coastal Science and Policy Program, the appointee will teach one to two required MS core courses each year. The appointee will be available to serve as faculty advisor for year-long, individual, solution-focused capstone projects of MS students; participate in grant proposals to support CSP students; and occasionally serve as a CSP committee member for PhD designated emphasis students. The appointee should have expertise in using social science methods and social objectives to solve coastal challenges, such as community-led work, equity, inclusion, and human rights. The selected candidate will leverage their professional network to help CSP students find appropriate non-academic partners, funding and in-kind support for capstone projects, and post-graduation career opportunities that build on students capstone project outcomes and overall CSP education. We seek a colleague who will expand the CSP facultys interdisciplinary and applied competencies and experience, and thus strengthen mentoring of students seeking a professional masters degree or the interdisciplinary/applied focus of the PhD designated emphasis.

We are especially interested in applicants with interdisciplinary, applied research experience that is implementable in real-world settings; broad multi-cultural and international professional networks; a record of mentoring in an academic environment and/or overseeing student internships; and/or experience teaching at the graduate level.

Appointments in the Adjunct Professor series are generally supported by non-State funds. This position will be fully or predominantly supported by state funds and is contingent upon the approval of an exception to policy which is granted by the Dean of Physical and Biological Sciences.

The hiring unit will not sponsor employment-eligible immigration statuses for this position.
