Position Summary or Faculty Qualifications
The Director, Benefits & Wellness is responsible for the design, implementation, administration, evaluation, and communication of the University's benefits and wellness programs, policies, and plans. This role requires a forward-thinking, analytics-driven individual while fostering a culture of well-being within the University community. This position will have 1-2 direct reports.
Duties and Responsibilities
Benefits - Oversee an approximate $30M benefits budget and plan annually.
- Ensure ERISA compliance with all benefit plans and serve as HIPAA Officer.
- Conduct benefit plan needs assessment, and evaluate existing benefit programs for cost effectiveness, and overall value to employee community.
- Determine and recommend plans to be offered/changed based on local and national market data, best practices, recruitment/retention data, and university resources.
- Implement and manage benefit plans including the development of key metrics.
- Monitor the legislative environment for proposed changes in applicable regulations and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
- Provide advice in the development of policies and procedures and communicate the same to employees.
- Direct relationships with University insurance brokers and vendors, as well as retirement plan vendors and community partners.
- Oversee employee benefit communications.
- Serve as Administrative Liaison to the University Retirement Plan Committee.
- Manage the collection and submission of all required employment and benefit data under the Affordable Care Act.
- Audit record keeping of benefits records to ensure accuracy and service to employees.
- Audit and evaluate benefits process for billing, enrollments, terminations and life status changes.
Employee Wellness - Design and implement a comprehensive, data-informed employee wellness program.
- Chairs the University employee wellness committee, collaborating cross-functionally to develop and promote employee health and wellness.
- Assess ROI for current and future health and wellness strategies, presenting data to leadership annually.
Secondary Responsibilities
- Serve on committees and special projects as requested by University Leadership.
- Assist in the planning of employee events, such as the annual Benefits/Wellness Fair and Go Move Challenge.
- Review vendor contracts.
- Support contract negotiations with University unions.
- Oversee HR office operations as needed in absence of the Vice President.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours
- This position may require additional hours and/or occasional evening or weekend hours related to the needs of the work duties, or professional conferences/special events
- Visual acuity- able to read computer screens and perform data entry
- Need to be able to use a keyboard (minimally partial manual dexterity)
- The ability to travel to all Saint Joseph's University locations occasionally (Hawk Hill, University City, and Lancaster)
- This position may be eligible for a flexible work arrangement per the University's guidelines and meeting performance expectations
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree recommended, may consider relevant work experience and practical knowledge in place of a bachelor's degree
- Minimum of 5 years of progressively more responsible experience in all lines of benefits administration
- Minimum 2 years of experience managing direct reports and/or in successful project management
- Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) and/or Google Workspace.
- Demonstrated quantitative/analytical skills, such as file integrations and vendor communications
- Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
- Personal commitment to excellence, particularly in the areas of data accuracy, customer service, best practices in employment, benefits management, and professional development.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong preference for experience managing benefits functions in a higher education environment
- Experience in change management with the ability to thrive in a fast paced and mulit-faceted environment
- Experience managing benefits for unionized employees
- Certifications strongly preferred: CEBS, GBA, CBP, or HRCI/SHRM
- HRIS software experience, Workday preferred
