Location

Job description

Vacancy ID: FAC0004901

Position Summary/Description:

The University of North Carolina ( UNC ) School of Medicine seeks a clinical faculty member to join our pediatric critical care team at the large regional campus in Wilmington, NC.

This multi-specialty academic practice and children's hospital is part of an innovative partnership between UNC and Novant Health to provide specialty care to children from southeastern and coastal NC communities. The Novant Health – New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NH- NHRMC ) facility and Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital is a full spectrum community-based children's hospital that serves as the tertiary care children's hospital for southeastern NC.

This is a clinically focused position with a strong connection to a large academic group and a quaternary children's hospital. Candidates must be Board Certified/Board Eligible in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and will join three other full-time intensivists along with additional per diem providers. This is a open rank, full-time, fixed-term faculty position, but salary benchmarks will be at private/community levels. Clinical time is spent providing direct care in our 8-bed critical care unit. The unit operates as a closed unit for trauma or surgical admissions. The unit is staffed and supported by nurses, pharmacists, and respiratory therapists with pediatric and neonatal critical care expertise. In addition to advanced respiratory support modalities such as the use of conventional and non-conventional modes of ventilation (e.g.-high-frequency oscillatory ventilation and nitric oxide), complex medical and surgical diagnoses are supported by the multiple pediatric subspecialties in Wilmington and Chapel Hill, including board-certified pediatric surgeons and pediatric anesthesia – allowing for the ability to perform complex surgeries and recovery in the NH- NHRMC PICU .

At NH- NHRMC , there are approximately 2700 total inpatient admissions and 4200 deliveries per year, with referrals from multiple other centers in our region, including a catchment area of approximately 200,000 children. The hospital serves as a regional trauma referral center. The consultative specialties offer full spectrum specialty care, including neonatology, cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, and other related specialties. There are over seventy children's specialists, faculty and advanced practice providers at this regional campus. In addition to the PICU , there is an eighteen-bed pediatric acute care floor and 45 bed Level III NICU . This campus will have ongoing clinical expansion, and the UNC School of Medicine campus here is also growing, with up to 60 medical students located here for 3rd and 4th years. The UNC -NH partnership is also making significant investments in research at the Wilmington campus.

Wilmington, NC, is a charming coastal city of ~280,000 people located between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean in the southeastern corner of North Carolina. It is a popular destination because of its moderate, four-season climate, historic preservation district, annual cultural events, and numerous championship golf courses. The historic downtown offers a 1.75-mile River Walk, and the nearby Wrightsville, Carolina, and Kure Beaches are all within half-hour drives from downtown Wilmington.

Education and Experience:

This full-time faculty position will be committed to patient care, contributions to education, and research encouraged but not required. An interest in program development also encouraged.
