Advertised Job Summary:

Under general supervision, serves as Business/Grants Manager for the Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy at the University of South Carolina, School of Medicine Columbia (SOMC). Provides administrative oversight of all financial activities associated with grants, contracts, start-up funds, service centers, and departmental operating accounts in the department. Demonstrates commitment to conducting business lawfully and ethically by consistent adherence to compliance policies, procedures, and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and 1 or more years of experience, which may be substituted by equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience with university software (Accounting Finance Intranet, PeopleSoft), experience working with faculty on grant management, ability to manage tight deadlines.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Skills needed include computer/internet fluency, demonstrated accounting experience, and ability to multitask with attention to detail. Ability to exercise discretion in interpreting and applying established department policies and procedures. Skilled use of computers and applications such as Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word. Ability to use of online USC electronic forms including University fiscal tracking, personnel management, travel, and purchasing and some experience with PeopleSoft. Ability to learn USCeRA project grant budgets and contracts. Completion of appropriate USC training classes (GRANTS or comparable). Required to conduct business lawfully and ethically by consistently adhering to compliance policies, procedures and regulations.

Job Duty:

Manages fiscal information related to grants, contracts, start-up funds, service centers, and operational budgets in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy. Develops budgetary forecasts across departmental accounts and routinely provides updates to principal investigators and the department chair. Interacts with and advises principal investigators (PI’s) on strategies to ensure funds are expended in a timely and appropriate manner. Monitors the progress of departmental expenditures through the university system. Verifies the accuracy of expenditures as they are posted and inform principal investigators when problems arise. Interacts with departmental human resources representatives to verify sufficient funds for hiring decisions.

Assists Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy faculty with pre-award and post-award services including account setup, assignment of charges to accounts, and post-close reconciliation. Processes transactions related to management of accounts as needed. Prepares Time and Effort reports and obtains necessary signatures/approval of these reports. Approves travel authorizations, requisitions, and purchase orders, as well as reimbursement requests by faculty, staff, students, and other individuals as appropriate.

Acts as a liaison with faculty and staff of other University departments, administrative staff within SOMC, outside agencies, and the general public regarding financial matters associated with departmental accounts.
