ResponsibilitiesThe incumbent's overall supervisory scope of responsibilities is the Sterile Processing unit on a 24 hour basis. In addition the incumbent is to assist the manager with the preparation, maintenance and monitoring of the budgets and staffing for the area. Responsibility includes appropriate allocation of staff, equipment, and other resources in a cost-effective fashion, and for developing and maintaining standards of care consistent with hospital policies and procedures and the Mission and Philosophy of the organization.
Responsibilities
1 Monitors the daily operations of the department to ensure that appropriate quality and productivity levels are achieved
1.1 Assures that department policies, practices and procedures conform to all appropriate regulations and standards.
1.2 Ensures that instrument trays and other items are properly decontaminated, assembled and sterilized.
1.3 Assures timely delivery of sterilized items to customers.
1.4 Assures that sterilization practices and equipment meet quality standards
1.5 Investigates problems/concerns and develops and implements action plans to resolve.
2 Provides direct supervision for the Sterile Processing Department staff in a way that creates a positive work environment and ensures compliance with all organizational and regulatory requirements.
2.1 Monitors individual performance and provides necessary guidance
2.2 Completes all performance appraisals on time
2.3 Promotes the certification of all technicians
2.4 Schedules and coordinates staff to ensure appropriate departmental coverage
3 Manages department resources efficiently and appropriately.
3.1 Assists in the preparation of realistic budgets for the department
3.2 Monitors expenses and responds appropriately to budget variances
3.3 Maintains an adequate inventory of instruments and other necessary supplies
3.4 Provides reports needed to monitor department expenses
4 Carries out administrative tasks to facilitate department operations
4.1 Establishes departmental policies and procedures in accordance with organizational and regulatory guidelines
4.2 Acts as liaison between the OR and SPD to promote effective communication
4.3 Orders supplies and instruments needed for the department
5 Oversees the surgical instrument tracking system to assure that accurate countsheets are maintained and that tray tracking and sterilization records are accurate.
5.1 Assures information on countsheets is accurate.
5.2 Assures that all sterilization testing is completed correctly as required, and documented consistently and accurately.
5.3 Reviews all information systems reports to proactively identify system issues that need to be corrected to maintain an accurate records.

Ability to communicate effectively in English Ability to use computer based programs. Ability to work routinely without direct supervision. Ability to demonstrate good judgment in daily activities. Ability to understand and implement infection control and hospital safety practices.
Training:
Familiarity with JCAHO, Title 22 and OSHA standards pertaining to sterilization and infection control
