Job description
GEM Technologies, Inc. (GEM) is seeking a Electrical Grid/Power Engineer to join our team. This position is part-time and will support the Savannah River National Laboratory in Aiken, South Carolina. This role is anticipated to be short-term.

Overview:
- Perform a variety of engineering assignments for planning and overseeing development, design, test, installation, operation, and maintenance of diverse power distribution and facility equipment and systems.
- Scope technical tasks and develop creative solutions to assigned problems.
- Begin using SRNS systems and meeting SRNS requirements with minimal supervisory guidance.
- Accepts complex tasks and receives minimal guidance from senior professionals.
- Incorporate conventional engineering or scientific practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning.
- Provide limited guidance and direction to less senior engineering professionals.
- Carry out development and qualification programs on tasks concurrent with other phases such as design and fabrication to better evaluate and minimize future problems.
- Develop alternate solutions to existing problems.
- Perform all detail work necessary to determine best solutions.
- Evaluate proposals and make recommendations based on proposed projects/tasks in area of assignment.
- May delegate portions of the detail work to less senior personnel.
- Prepare costs and schedule estimates on proposed projects/tasks in assigned area.
- Demonstrate cost and schedule consciousness through timely completion of assigned tasks and projects.
- Prepare manuals and other documents supporting or publicizing the technical effort.
- Demonstrate creative ability through medium of patent disclosures, problem solving, engineering reports, technical papers and articles.
Clearance & Citizenship Requirement:
- To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed.
- Due to the federal nature of the work, a U.S. Citizenship is requ ired.
Desired Skills:
- Master or PhD degree in applicable science or engineering discipline.
- Understands and applies advanced knowledge of discipline's standard theories, concepts, principles and techniques.
- Working knowledge of standard engineering/scientific practices and applications.

The DOE's Savannah River National Laboratory, located in Aiken, South Carolina, is the applied research and development laboratory at the Savannah River Site (SRS) and serves the DOE and the nation by providing innovative solutions across the country and around the world. COMPENSATION: GEM does not publish salary ranges on external job boards; all ranges listed are estimates made by vendors and not actual salary ranges. GEM’s offered compensation is dependent on candidates’ education, qualifications, and relevant years of experience.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s Degree in science or engineering and 10+ years of relevant experience.
- Knowledge of distribution systems with voltages ranging from 120V to 13.8kV, transformers and switchgear.
- Knowledge of electrical National Codes and Standards such as NFPA 70/70E and IEEE
- Electrical system protection, coordination curves, load studies, and arc flash analysis.
- Hands-on electrical design validation and Verification experience.
- Low and medium voltage experience developing system repair designs, system calibration, and installation plans.
- Experience in low to Medium Voltage Industrial Power Systems with voltage of 480V through 13.8kV.
- Experience providing oversight, design, planning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of low and medium voltage systems infrastructure such as distribution cables, control systems, protective relaying, transformers, switchgear, substations, breakers, motor control centers, alarms, and overall system coordination.
- Experience performing modeling and simulation for power systems and short circuit analysis using simulation software platforms (e.g., ETAP).
- Others include lighting design, uninterruptible power systems, vessel heaters and heat trace, lockout/tagout, relay control systems, variable speed drives, diesel generators and automatic transfer switches, harmonics, and their effects on electrical systems.
