POSITION SUMMARY

The Financial Counselor acts as a technical resource regarding all aspects of Admissions and financial counseling.  The Financial Counselor is responsible for providing admissions training to all Unit Assistants, House Charges, and Business Office personnel, as well as assisting in developing appropriate policies and procedures and forms for use in the admissions office. 

This position is also responsible for verifying benefits and eligibility for potential and actual patient admissions, for completing the actual admission/registration process required for the patient’s admission to the hospital and for preparing the admission financial folder.  The position is also responsible for providing patient financial counseling and collecting co-pays/deductibles from patients.

The Financial Counselor is responsible for developing an understanding of hospital-based services and to ensure that these services are properly represented to payers and patients throughout the verification and admission process.  This position is responsible for coordinating with Case Management and communicating appropriate information regarding benefit and coverage requirements in a manner which will minimize the hospital’s risk of non-payment while contributing to the patient’s ability to maximize their benefit for needed service.

The Financial Counselor is responsible for communicating hospital financial expectations to the patient and/or family in a professional and courteous manner while demonstrating the care and concern which the hospital feels for the patient.  This position is an integral part of the Business Office team, and is largely responsible for gathering and communicating critical information which will enable the hospital to meet all known payer requirements and thereby minimize the risk of payment reduction or denials.  As a member of the business office staff, this position is responsible for contributing to improved operations and for promoting teamwork throughout the business office.

The Financial Counselor is responsible for identifying potential payment and risk issues, and communicating this information, to the Business Office Manager or other appropriate Hospital Manager in a timely manner.  The Financial Counselor will, in all cases, assist the hospital in ensuring that the highest level of integrity and compliance with known payer requirements is maintained at all times and reflected accurately within the areas of their responsibility.

Qualifications

Education : High school graduate, or equivalent.

Experience: A minimum of two (2) years experience in admission processes and collections procedures, and a working knowledge of managed care; interpretation of insurance coverage plans, co-payments and deductible schedules and payment plans; and a working knowledge of computers and business software programs (EXCEL) preferred.
