Job description

Overview

Under the supervision of the Lead Bus Driver, this position is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient transport of children and parents / families between program activities and home and on field trips . This position is also responsible to keep the vehicle clean and in safe operating conditions always.

Training

  1. Participates in an annual review which includes onboard observation of road performance

by a State Certified School Bus Instructor.

  1. Attends a combination of annual classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel instruction s ufficient to enable:
    1. Safe and efficient vehicle operation.
    2. Safely run a fixed route , including loading and unloading children, stopping at railroad crossings and performing other specialized driving maneuvers.
    3. Basic first aid administration in case of injury .
    4. Emergency situations procedures including vehicle e vacuation.
    5. Special equipment operation such as wheelchair lifts, assistance devices or special occupant restraints.
    6. Determination of necessary records and their accurate maintenance.
  2. Participates in any additional training to meet State or local transportation requirements.
  3. After being trained in Centro 's Transportation Manual, the Bus Driver collaborates with the Bus Aide i n teaching children the correct sa fety procedures for boarding and exiting a bus as well as the danger zones around the vehicle

Driving the Route

  1. Assists the bus aide to ensure the s afety and well-being of children by providing direct supervision
  2. Follows the safest and most efficient assigned route, as determined by the Lead Bus Driver

along with the Transportation, Facilities , & Safety Manager as well as the A rea Manager.

  1. Ensures routes stay within 60 minutes unless there are no s horter alternatives. Focuses on having stops instead of door to door pick-ups.
  2. Knows the routes, location of stops and which children should board or exit at each one.
  3. Obeys all applicable laws and regulations to ens ur e the safety of pa sse ngers. Thi s includes applicable Head Start Performance Standards.
  4. Ensures children are properly restrained before starting the bus engine in the afternoon and that all passengers follow the program rules when riding the vehicles.
  5. Ensures that children are re l eased only to authorized individual s listed on the child's Contact Inform at ion form .                                  ·
  6. Ensures the safe loading a nd unloading of chi l d ren at all times as exp l ained in Centro 's Transportation Manual.
  7. Ensures that the bus is empty at the end of eac h run and t h at all ch ildr en are accounted for.

As outlined in Centro's Transportation Manual, strict l y fo ll ows the protoco l for using pigtails to ens ure no child is left alone.

  1. Drives for regular class days , organized fie l d tr ip s a nd occasional evening meeting s. 12)Establishes a relationship of trust and confidence wit h the parents and the children.
  1. Shares in fo rmati on on a daily basis with classroom staff, s uch as conversations with parents and obse rvation s of children.
  2. Reports any information or concerns about Head Start / Early Head Start fam il ies to the fam il y services staff or teacher.
  3. Communicates and coordinates w ith the Fami l y Service Specialist when there is no author i zed person show up to pick-u p a chi l d in the afternoon.
  4. Ensures the bus aid u ses the company ce ll phone to b e able to ha ve communication and contact with the parents and center at any time.
  5. Fo ll ows all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, Commercial   Driver' s License (CDL) rule s and other local transportation regulations a s appl i cab l e.

I 8) Operates the vehicle in a safe and efficient manner.

  1. Completes   the   dail y   Pre-Trip   and   Post-Trip   inspection s as   outl ined   in   Centro 's Transportation Manual and turn it in weekly to the Lead Bu s Driver.
  2. Performs   monthly   emergency bus evacuation drills   in   accordance to Centro 's Transportation Manual.
  3. Knows how to operate specia l equipment s u ch as whee l c h air lifts , assistance device s or special occ upant r estra int s.

  1. Monitors and maintain s all vehicle fluid levels as outlined in Centro 's Transportation Manual.
  2. Keep s the interiors of the vehicles clean at all times .
  3. C le ans the exteriors of the vehicles as weather a ll ows.
  4. Maintains required paperwork for vehic l e maintenance and program requirements.
  5. Reports any damage or malfunction imm ediately to the Lead Bus Driver.
  6. Performs daily Pre-trip and Post-trip check li st of the bu s, including maintenance of emergency supplies on the bus and commun i cat ion system between th e bus and the program as outlined in Cent ro 's Transportation Manual.
  7. Respo n s i b l e fo r record i ng and subm i tting gas and oil r eceipt totals to t h e Lead Bus Driver month l y. Fo ll ows up on cha r ges that do n ot reconc il e .
  8. Maintains neces sary transportat i on record s as outli n ed in Centro's Transportation Manual.

Qualifications

The minimum requ irem ent is high sc hool d i ploma or GED and a c urr ent in-state Comme rci a l Driver's L i cense (CD L ) wit h a Sc h oo l Bus and Passenger endorsement and / o r other criteria specifical l y r eq uired by th e state. Has CPR and First Aide Certification. Bil i ngual preferred E ng li s h /Spa ni s h.
