Primary Function:
- Under the direct supervision of the Ophthalmologist/Optometrist, the Ophthalmic Technician provides a variety of preliminary ocular assessment activities, including but not limited to, obtaining a complete and accurate medical history, visual acuity and stereo testing, lensometry, motility, applanation tonometry, pupil dilation, potential acuity meter testing and, and manifest refraction/autorefractometry. Increasingly complex patient procedures may also be assigned as determined by level of proficiency and experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Provides assistance to the physician with examination procedures and other patient care activities as requested.
- Oversees the efficient flow of patients through the eye clinic, assuring that resources are sufficient for scheduled patients and that they are directed appropriately.
- When appropriate, performs lensometry, including reading lenses with multifocal and progressive adds, power of sphere, axis of cylinder power and orientation of prism.
- Performs intraocular pressure assessments through the use of applanation tonometry and also utilizing the tonopen.
- Instills dilating drops (and other ophthalmic drops) per physician's instructions.
- Interacts and communicates in a professional manner with fellow employees, medical staff and other health team professionals.
- Ensures that exam rooms are stocked with appropriate instruments, as well as patient handouts, & any other equipment/materials, as required by physicians.
- Formulates and maintains effective working relationships with peers, managers and other members of the health care team.
- Receives constructive feedback in a positive self-develop-mental manner.
- Functions as an effective team member.
- Demonstrate adaptability, flexibility, and accountability when changes are made in job description and responsibility, including performing all qualified duties throughout other areas of the hospital.
- Strives to maintain the confidentiality of all patients and their families/significant other(s).
Position Requirements
Qualifications Educational requirements: - High School diploma required
Licensure: - Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) after 2 years on the job required
Experience: - Two years of clinical/healthcare experience required
- Proven record of attention to detail, ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Proficient and accurate computer typing skills
- Must be able to effectively communicate both in writing and orally
- Broad knowledge base of ophthalmic terminology
