Job description
As stated in our newly adopted strategic plan, McCallie takes an expansive view of education, seeking to form the whole boy. In his journey to manhood, McCallie comes alongside the student and supports his mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional development. In this regard, McCallie’s Counseling Center plays a key role by providing personal and social counseling on both a drop-in and appointment basis. A caring adult with a trained listening ear can be immensely helpful to a young man who is struggling, regardless of his particular challenge. It is our mission to provide such support by investing time and care into the lives of our students. The focus is on developing true relationships and a sense of community while striving to serve the young men as he faces the challenges present throughout adolescence by investing time and care into their lives.
This position works collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team including the School Chaplain’s team, Learning Center, and advisory teams who provide pastoral care and academic support to students.
The successful candidate will also be involved in the McCallie community beyond school counseling. That may be through classroom instruction, residential leadership for boarding students, or other activities such as coaching sports or leading activities. The community involvement helps to build relationships and trust with the boys.
This is a 10-month, full-time position. It is considered exempt under the FLSA, and it is eligible for full benefits.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide student counseling services related to personal, social, and emotional well-being. This will be accomplished primarily through individual counseling as well as small group counseling.
- Serve as a consultant for parents, families, and teachers on students' needs, effectively partnering with all constituents to eliminate barriers to learning.
- Meet with each student assigned and be actively engaged in the community to build relationships and trust with the students.
- Provide proactive community outreach initiatives, such as to develop and deliver mental health programming for faculty/staff and families to support student well-being.
- Refer students to outside counseling when needs require and support the ongoing success of partnerships with external providers.
- Possess strong positive interpersonal skills among students, families, faculty/administration, and other constituents;
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality supporting students and families with sensitive information and circumstances.
- Must be a certified school counselor or licensed professional counselor.
- Adolescent counseling experience is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to connect with students and use a variety of counseling techniques specific to school counseling.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with students, parents, teachers, administrators, staff, and outside professionals.
- In-depth knowledge of adolescent mental health issues and appropriate interventions.
- Strong multicultural competency and a deep commitment to creating a welcoming environment.
- Demonstrated professionalism, discretion, sound judgment, equity, honesty, and personal accountability.
- Strong computer skills and a willingness to continue to upgrade technology knowledge.
- Ability to multitask, collaborate and act independently as the situation demands.
