Job description
Purpose:
To provide professional pharmaceutical services to the Medical Center and community as directed, and to carry responsibility for supervision and/or coordination of Inpatient Pharmacy operations during assigned shifts and for operation of all other projects and programs as assigned.
Responsibilities:
- Supervises and coordinates day-to-day department responsibilities during assigned shifts. Accepts responsibility for any absent Pharmacist(s). Responsible for quality and appropriateness of technician activities.Possesses the ability to obtain and interpret information considering age specific needs. Performs evaluation of the therapeutic appropriateness and cost effectiveness of therapy using chart, all labs and criteria and intervenes as needed. Actively participates in orientation and training of personnel/students. Coordinates the operation of the Pharmacy to insure that patients receive the correct medication, in the right dosage, at the proper time as prescribed by the physician and/or as approved by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and adds drugs to IV solutions accurately and with the proper sterile technique and monitors patients receiving IV drugs to insure that drugs are available at the proper time intervals.Recommends new methods and procedures to improve efficiency, safety and security; and assists the Pharmacy administrative staff in the development and implementation of new methods or procedures.
- Responds to all cardiac arrest situations by assisting in the preparation and administration of medications at the proper times as well as assisting the physician in determining the proper drug therapy, drug dosage, drug required, etc.Responds to all drug information requests from professionals, counsels inpatients and outpatients concerning their medications and their compliance with directions and communicates to physicians any significant deviations of compliance. Investigates complex questions integrating different types of information and knowledge. Provides patient education including unusual or specialized therapy. Helps other pharmacists develop their skills and presents pharmacist CE’s. Presents inservices for nurses and pharmacy technicians. Consults the physician regarding non-formulary drugs, drug interactions and therapeutic duplication and suggests alternative therapy. Responds to consult requests for drug dosing/monitoring by providing initial dosing recommendations.
- Participates in departmental/other CE programs to maintain/enhance professional competence.
