We invite applicants to apply for the position of Limnological Researcher in the Biological Limnology lab of the Large
Lakes Observatory (University of Minnesota Duluth). The successful candidate will join a multi-institutional research project on the ecology
of seasonally-freezing lakes. This position is open to recent university graduates with a BS/BA degree and limited work experience in their
field (<1 year).
The successful candidate will work with graduate students, research technicians, and senior scientists from multiple
institutions from the US and Canada. This position represents an opportunity for new environmental scientists to build experience in cutting
edge limnological field and lab methods, build their professional network, and contribute to a rapidly growing field of ecology (winter
limnology). This is an excellent opportunity for young scientists wanting to build their CVs before pursuing graduate studies in the
environmental sciences field.
Job Duties Field research (35%)
- Participate in year-round sampling of
lakes throughout the US Midwest and Central Ontario
- Help conduct field experiments
- Prepare supplies and equipment for field
operations
- Deploy and retrieve environmental sensors in lakes
- Trailer and operate boats and snowmobiles
- Participate
in overnight travel, work outdoors in remote locations and inclement weather
Laboratory work (35%)
- Process water and
plankton samples using standard limnological methods
- Analyze water chemistry samples
- Purchase and organize lab
supplies
Data management and analysis (10%)
- Organize and manage field, lab, and sensor data
- Manage and harmonize
large environmental datasets
- Conduct data analysis and visualization
Reporting (10%)
- Report on work to supervisors
and collaborators
- Participate in scientific conferences and workshops
Training and supervision (10%)
- Help train and
supervise part-time and summer undergraduate lab and field assistants
Qualifications Required
Qualifications
- BS/BA from an accredited university, or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four
years.
- Ability to work in remote field settings and inclement weather
- Strong written and spoken communication
skills
- Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills
- Strong organization skills
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50
lbs. over uneven terrain
- Ability to work with a wide range of researchers, including undergraduate and graduate students,
professional staff, faculty, and administrators
Preferred Qualifications
- BS/BA in Biology, Environmental Chemistry, Geology,
Environmental Science or similar field, or equivalent qualification
- Experience performing field work in the environmental sciences
context, including operating and trailering boats, ATVs, snowmobiles
- Experience with basic limnological field and lab methods (water
and plankton sampling, water filtration, using environmental sensors)
- Independent research experience during undergraduate
career
- Winter wilderness experience
- Strong laboratory safety orientation
- Interest in pursuing graduate studies in
ecology
- Experience with spreadsheet, database, and statistical analysis
software
