CAPS Director

Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Executive Director of Mental Health and Trauma Support Services (MHTSS), serves as administrator and a member of the UHW senior leadership team. Gives strategic, programmatic, and operational oversight to the department responsible for providing mental health services to students.  

The Director of CAPS leads and directs all CAPS programs and services, provides oversight of all clinicians and staff, ensures the effective and efficient management of CAPS’ resources, and collaborates with directors of the other components of University Health and Wellbeing and with key campus colleagues to advance the health and well-being of students and the Michigan State community.

The Director is responsible for ensuring that the programs and services provided by CAPS are person-centered and meet the needs of the diversity of Michigan State’s students. The Director of CAPS is responsible for delivering consistently high quality services in an ethical and accountable manner, in alignment with the CAPS care and service model. Under the direction of the Executive Director of MHTSS, the Director develops and implements strategy for CAPS and ensures that rigorous assessment and quality improvement methods are utilized throughout  services, and that all policies, practices, and programs comply with applicable statues, regulations, accreditation requirements, and professional standards. In addition, the Director and staff are responsible for the quality and effectiveness of health promotion and education programs that are essential links to the clinical services.

Job Functions:

• Unit Leadership (40%):
  • Provides leadership and directs administrative, budget, logistical and other related functions for CAPS.
  • Allocates personnel and fiscal resources to maximize program accomplishments.
  • Under the direction of the Executive Director implements efforts to achieve integrated mental health and trauma response services across the campus and community.
  • Identifies industry “best practices” and develops programs that meet or exceed industry standards.
  • Manages CAPS budget
  • Provides direction, supervision, and training. Responsible for recruitment, hiring and corrective/disciplinary action. Set performance standards, evaluate performance and provide staff opportunity for growth.

• Strategic Planning and Program Implementation (30%)
  • Collaborates with UHW leaders to develop holistic approaches to health and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Participate and contribute to departmental strategic planning process including extensive literature reviews.
  • Works closely with University Health and Wellbeing and University Communications staff to promote services and program accomplishments.
  • Responsible for data reporting and monitoring to support UHW initiatives and MHTSS program evaluation.
  • Uses data to drive outcomes and decisions regarding continuation, re-design &/or elimination of activities.
  • Provides client/patient-centered services and solutions, including active engagement of the service populations.

• Coordination of health equity initiatives and policies (30%)

• • In collaboration with the MHTSS Executive Director, proactively recommends changes to established procedures and practices, programs, services, or communication strategies based on trends and observation to mitigate mental health and healthcare access disparities for students.
  • Provides consultation, guidance, and direction about policies and best practices for effective and inclusive communications to students.
  • Evaluates dashboards to monitor student satisfaction within UHW, responding to disparities for student.
  • Under the direction of the Executive Director collaborates with Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion, Office of Civil Rights, other Student Life and Engagement Division, and other community partners to support shared goals and promote health equity.
  • Develops programs and cultivates an environment that supports the mission of the university, the sustainable health plan and UHW strategic plans.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a master’s degree in social work, Psychology, Counseling, Public Health, or a related field; five to eight years of related clinical and administrative experience in college/university counseling or similar mental health setting and prior supervisory/managerial experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Licensure or license-eligibility in Michigan is also required. 

Desired Qualifications

• Licensed or license-eligible in Michigan.
• At least ten years’ clinical and administrative experience in a college/university counseling or similar mental health setting including seven years of progressive supervisory/managerial experience.
• Demonstrated ability as a leader and manager with a collective, respectful administrative style and positive approach to problem solving.
• Commitment to high quality professional and clinical standards, diligent attentiveness, and dedication to professional ethics. 
• Strong fiscal management/budget skills.
• Experience working with a culturally diverse community with a commitment to the values of strong multicultural competences.
• Excellent communication, public speaking, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills with the ability to develop a broad perspective and work collaboratively with other units.
• Experience in a college or university mental health setting; and experience in doctoral internship training programs, Intensive Clinical Services, multicultural engagement, and psychiatry.
