CAPS Director

Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Executive Director of Mental Health and Trauma Support Services (MHTSS), serves as administrator and a member of the UHW senior leadership team. Gives strategic, programmatic, and operational oversight to the department responsible for providing mental health services to students.  

The Director of CAPS leads and directs all CAPS programs and services, provides oversight of all clinicians and staff, ensures the effective and efficient management of CAPS’ resources, and collaborates with directors of the other components of University Health and Wellbeing and with key campus colleagues to advance the health and well-being of students and the Michigan State community.

The Director is responsible for ensuring that the programs and services provided by CAPS are person-centered and meet the needs of the diversity of Michigan State’s students. The Director of CAPS is responsible for delivering consistently high quality services in an ethical and accountable manner, in alignment with the CAPS care and service model. Under the direction of the Executive Director of MHTSS, the Director develops and implements strategy for CAPS and ensures that rigorous assessment and quality improvement methods are utilized throughout  services, and that all policies, practices, and programs comply with applicable statues, regulations, accreditation requirements, and professional standards. In addition, the Director and staff are responsible for the quality and effectiveness of health promotion and education programs that are essential links to the clinical services.

Job Functions:

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a master’s degree in social work, Psychology, Counseling, Public Health, or a related field; five to eight years of related clinical and administrative experience in college/university counseling or similar mental health setting and prior supervisory/managerial experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Licensure or license-eligibility in Michigan is also required.
