Job description
The Director, Precision Medicine Pathology is an experienced leader in discovery and translational pathology in the pharmaceutical industry. This position will report to the Senior Director, Precision Medicine Pathology. It is someone capable of mentoring and managing Scientific Directors as well as Associate Directors, and someone who is generally recognized as an expert in the field. It is someone who can substantially contribute to the development and evolution of the overarching translational pathology strategy in addition to managing the implementation of that strategy. It is someone who can manage both the expansion and changing mission of a highly complex organization as it supports mergers and support for immunology in addition to its traditional support for oncology programs. The Director, Precision Medicine Pathology is expected to recognize, recruit, and appropriately level talent for Scientific Directors and Associate Directors for Precision Medicine Pathology, as well as for other positions within Precision Medicine.
Responsibilities:
- Manage other highly proficient pathology scientists (spanning doctoral level scientists to histotechnologists), ensuring high quality technical, scientific, and strategic decision making.
- Contribute to the overarching scientific and organizational strategy for precision medicine pathology, including accommodation of expansion into other therapeutic areas and integration of acquisitions.
- Provide expertise to project teams to ensure state-of-the-art thinking on appropriate biomarker and diagnostic technologies (thinking beyond immunohistology), evaluating their scientific basis and clinical applicability, the validation status and any technical or statistical issues related to the proposed biomarkers.
- Recognize, recruit, and mentor talent primarily for precision medicine pathology, but also for the broader precision medicine group.
- Utilizes clinical pathology & disease biology knowledge to lead translation of research biomarker assays for use in the clinic. Designs experiments, evaluates results in the context of the larger project to answer scientific questions. Prepare presentations for cross-functional teams.
- Advances scientific expertise within function beyond direct area of disciplinary expertise. Identifies and sources emerging scientific technologies and trends from multiple internal and external sources to assess relevance and implement within precision medicine pathology.
- Leads the design of pathology experiments in collaboration with translational and companion diagnostic teams to achieve specific goals and interpret pathology findings in the context of the overall project.
- Provides expert pathology consultations for colleagues in other groups to develop molecular, cellular, and in vivo assays & models – e.g., qualify human tissue, determine specimen collections & processing, confirm models reflect human disease.
- Manages both internal and external collaborations.
Qualifications:
- Highly experienced biomedical leader (PhD, MD, or MD/PhD) with a minimum of 10 years of industry experience, preferably including experience in a pharmaceutical development organization; strong preference for experience with companion diagnostic development and/or biomarker development. Exceptionally strong candidates lacking a doctorate, but with 15 years industry experience may be considered.
- Demonstrated excellence in developing and implementing overarching scientific and organizational strategies.
- Demonstrated excellence in independently leading and conducting research and ability to evaluate, interpret and present complex scientific data.
- In-depth experience with the discovery, characterization, clinical validation, and utilization of innovative biomarkers; experience with companion diagnostics is a strong plus.
- Excellent leadership skills including motivation and delegation.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills in English. Able to distill complex topics into easily understandable points and concepts.
- High level of business awareness.
- Experience in human translational research with biomarker application in clinical trials and awareness of the challenges of implementing biomarker and diagnostic technologies in the clinical setting.
- In-depth knowledge of the drug development process and the role of translational pathology plays within that process.
- Experience with immunohistochemistry assay design, antibody selection, and optimization of IHC protocols, particularly in novel target assay development; experience with other tissue-based assay development and interpretation modalities (ISH, multiplex, etc.); experience with digital pathology and artificial intelligence is highly preferre
