Job Description
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Avery Dennison is looking for a highly creative, passionate and rigorous scientist to augment its Polymer Materials Science and Engineering expertise by harnessing deep scientific understanding and creativity in the area of complex nanostructured materials and laminates to deliver novel functional material solutions and innovations. The position will be with the highly interdisciplinaryMaterials Science and Characterization (MSC) Group, which primarily supports R&D activities globally at Avery Dennison’s Mentor, OH location, chartered to develop technologies, fundamental understanding of phenomena using experiments and predictive capabilities, support and resolve technical problems ranging from long term projects to urgent manufacturing and quality issues stemming from across Avery Dennison’s global operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Drive fundamental understanding and insights of complex materials and phenomena (silicone and non-silicone release coatings, polymeric adhesives, gels, colloids and multi-layer laminates, conductive composite, graphics films)
Conceive and create new material paradigms spanning applications in innovative pressure sensitive laminate materials, silicone and non-silicone based release coatings, conductive composites and laminates, functional films and coatings (including graphics, release etc.) with a highly practical focus.
Identify and drive appropriate experimentation and/or modeling approaches to construct sound scientific structure-property-process-performance fundamentals; for ex., molecular- polymeric architecture and molecular weight - network level drivers, rheology and viscoelastic responses, thermodynamic and kinetic control and modulation of properties, surface and interfacial behavior, innovative use of polymer blends and alloys and mixtures and advanced material concepts.
Work with cross-functional teams in helping translate concepts to reality and in constructing careful experiments to prove/disprove hypotheses blending scientifically driven experimentation, predictive computational and characterization driven insights.
Use sound materials science and engineering to guide and solve problems at the core elemental level leading to the development of model-ready databases translating to actionable insights across R&D, product development and process scale-up.
Interface and collaborate with technical teams to help perform relevant testing and results for further analysis. Conduct appropriate analysis using techniques such as microscopy, spectroscopy, rheology, mechanical and adhesion testing as applicable. Proactively develop and use test methods to answer complex questions where no ready made solution exists. Utilize advanced methodologies such as high throughput testing to accelerate the pace of innovation.
Work in a highly collaborative manner and strong commitment to excellence, diversity and inclusion principles of the corporation.
Provide and maintain a safe work environment by participating in safety programs, committees, or teams and by conducting laboratory and pilot plant safety audits.
Interpret data, document findings within LIMS/ELN, and communicate analytical results with MSC and divisional scientists in a high-quality, professional, and timely manner.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
PhD in Polymer/Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or a related discipline.
Minimum of 5 years of direct industrial R&D experience in developing novel materials paradigms using polymers and nanocomposites in any contemporary area spanning functional films, conductive inks and composites, adhesives and low surface energy coatings.
Demonstrated expertise in the materials science of soft visco-elastic materials such as polymers, adhesives, gels . Documented evidence of working with and leading highly cross-functional teams involving material formulators, process engineers and product development teams.
Demonstrated expertise in innovating highly creative materials solutions using rigorous materials science and ability to rapidly prototype to translate ideas to tangible and practical outcomes.
Thorough knowledge of polymers/coatings, formulating, characterization (particularly rheology) and processing methods and production environments is highly desirable.
Experience with material characterization techniques such as rheological and mechanical testing, spectroscopy and adhesion testing is highly desirable. Candidates with solid background in polymer rheology strongly preferred.
Must demonstrate excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills coupled with creativity, versatility and analytical thinking in designing experiments to solve technical problems. Experience with modeling of data and materials simulations approaches is a plus.
Must possess excellent hands-on experimentation skills. Prior experience in adhesives or plastics industries is an advantage.
Ability to work independently as well as in a diverse multi-functional team and ability to interact effectively with both internal and external collaborators. .
Effective written and verbal communication skills. High level of motivation, initiative and energy
Good computer skills and excellent record keeping.
Capable of working in a fast paced and dynamic environment.
Less than 10% travel expected.
