APPOINTMENT TYPE: Full-Time Regular (FTR)
LOCATION: Oak Ridge, TN or Hybrid
SALARY RANGE: $99,424 to $146,289
PURPOSE:
Provide highly complex communications and marketing for products and services, specifically in the areas of public and employee communications, public and media relations, marketing communications and advertising, corporate identity, and brand management, web, video, and online-content development, social media engagement, and events. This individual will support senior management by serving as an associate manager and will provide expert project management, strategic thinking, and senior-level planning and execution capabilities.
Marketing and Communications Strategic Counsel
- In partnership with the group manager, provides expert communications counsel and recommendations to senior leadership, related to key business goals and objectives.
- Advises and uses appropriate tools and tactics to communicate and promote Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) capabilities to internal and external audiences.
- Advises and implements strategic channels and approaches to provide brand storytelling and content marketing of ORAU capabilities, experts, and products.
- Monitors factors affecting ORAU and Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) brands and corporate reputation and makes recommendations for strategies to address issues and minimize risks.
- Leads long-range branding strategies to strengthen the ORAU and ORISE name recognition and brand identities in support of business development.
- Recommends new channels, tools, or approaches to improve communication and marketing strategies and processes.
Media/Public Relations and Corporate Communications
- Provides strategic counsel on important media relations needs and key employee communications efforts.
- Serves as backup to organizational spokesperson and as a key media relations contact for media inquiries, interviews, and requests for information.
- Provides leadership and support on important public and community relations initiatives.
- Counsels the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and other senior leaders on key communications to employees, prepares early drafts for the CEO and other leaders, and develops and helps polish other executive communications pieces.
Key Projects Management
- Provides effective project management leadership for various communications and marketing projects with minimal supervision, managing customer budgets, and ensuring quality deliverables.
- Ensures the successful implementation of plans by serving as a key project lead and directing the efforts of other team members contributing to the project.
- Designs and develops effective print and web communications strategies to address clients’ needs.
- Provides extensive writing, editing and technical content development and assesses quality of communications developed by the team or customers.
- Research markets, audiences, and competition and supports the development of strategic marketing and communications plans.
- Determines and develops strategic messages to reach and influence key stakeholders.
Associate Manager Role
- Serves as associate manager of select professional-level team members in Public and Employee Communications (PEC) Group, providing counsel on reputation management, risk mitigation, budget management, etc.
Bachelor’s degree in communications or Public Relations (PR), Marketing, Business, English, or related field (master’s degree preferred) and 10+ years of directly related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience performing duties as described may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
- Considered expert in field within the organization.
- Develops solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and innovation.
- Contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques, and standards.
- Ensures solutions are consistent with organization objectives.
- Ensures work is performed without appreciable direction.
- Exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignment.
- Manages professional level employees.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
- Multiple channels, engagement methods, and tools (i.e., social media, podcasting, blogging, voice, video, etc.,).
- Organizational knowledge.
- Business savvy.
Extensive working knowledge of software and/or technical skills in:
- Microsoft Office Suite software (specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Web content planning and development tools and skills (i.e., information architectures, 508 compliance standards for accessibility, audience usability requirements, search engine optimization for content, search engine marketing, etc.,).
- Adobe Creative Suite software (including Photoshop).
- Social media management tools (i.e., Sprout Social, etc.,).
- Media databases (i.e., Cision media database, etc.,).
- Teams, Zoom, SharePoint or other team collaboration and meeting and networking sites.
- Project-tracking tools and databases (i.e., Workamajig, Clients and Profits, or other similar systems).
- Photography equipment, cameras, and other audio/video (A/V) equipment; running A/V presentations; keywording and managing images and other digital assets through an image-management database.
Specific examples include:
- Marketing planning and execution, collaboration with business development teams preferred.
- Public/media relations planning and execution; backup to organizational spokespersons, pitching & targeted media list development preferred.
- Speech and presentation development for executives; executive communications preferred.
- Significant writing/editing; technical content development preferred.
- Project management: managing customer budgets preferred.
- Day-to-day corporate communications: collaboration with organizational leadership for campaigns preferred.
- Web and digital media content research & development, as well as social media planning and engagement; search engine optimization, search engine marketing, writing for usability and accessibility, collaboration with web and Information Technology (IT) teams preferred.
*The candidate’s starting salary will be determined upon hire and ORAU will use salary survey data, internal comparators, and the candidate’s qualifications to determine salary.
