Carthage College seeks a dedicated and experienced engineering educator to join the faculty as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Engineering starting August 2024. Carthage College admitted its first cohort of engineering students Fall 2024. We seek a teacher-scholar to contribute to our new non-disciplinary engineering programs.

Engineering at Carthage is a design and practice-based program with an emphasis in community-focused engineering. Students learn engineering through real projects partnered with real stakeholders to address real needs for our community. Engineering at Carthage joins a vibrant STEM community building on Carthage College’s mission: Seeking Truth, Building Strength, Inspiring Service - Together. This academic program is rooted in the liberal arts, designed to emphasize student self-discovery and exploration and provide opportunities to grow in all facets of life. Engineering at Carthage is hands-on and experiential; students learn to become engineers by practicing engineering under the guidance of faculty mentors.

The successful applicant will be involved in shaping a new engineering program at Carthage that is informed by disciplinary best practices, meshes with the mission of the College, and builds on the existing curricular strengths of the College. Successful applicants are expected to contribute to the teaching and advising needs of the undergraduate engineering programs as well as to engage undergraduate students in a collaborative, externally-funded scholarship program. Responsibilities include teaching 14 contact hours per semester in the program and developing curriculum for others. Applicants with background in electronics, controls, internet of things, manufacturing, and systems analysis are of particular interest, though applicants from all engineering backgrounds will be considered.

Carthage College has a strong history of fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, a strong physics program that is nationally recognized for its career placements, an active space technology development and demonstration program, and significant extramural departmental funding that supports undergraduate scholarships and research projects. Additional opportunities for mentored undergraduate research are available through the College’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program.

Fall 2023 engineering moved into phase 1 of 9000 sq. ft. of newly renovated Engineering Center on the first floor of Carthage’s Lentz Hall. Phase 2 opens Fall 2024. The Engineering Center will include design studios, teaching and research labs, and makerspace open to the Carthage community, the space is strategically located adjacent to the David A. Straz Jr. Center, home to NASA’s Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium.

Minimum Qualifications

Meet all requirements for a Ph.D. in Engineering by August 2024

Commitment to innovative curriculum development in engineering education

Demonstrated record of or potential for successful undergraduate engineering instruction

Demonstrated record of or potential for engagement of undergraduate engineering students into scholarly endeavors

Demonstrated commitment to supporting and improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom
