Job Overview As Synopsys’s Product Quality Engineer, you will be a member of the team responsible for the manufacturing, quality and reliability of Synopsys hardware systems, working in a cross functional team. The Product Quality Engineer, in a hands-on role, is responsible for ensuring suppliers meet Synopsys requirements for quality, delivery, and cost; managing the external supply chain up from component suppliers to contract manufacturing (CM’s) partners and down to distribution and logistics partners. The Product Quality Engineer drives periodic cross-functional Quality review through the supply chain to drive improvement in Quality, Manufacturing, Test, Engineering Changes activities and Quality Excursions.
The ideal candidate for this role possesses a broad level of experience in the manufacturing/fabrication of PCB, PCBA, high speed/pin count electrical connectors, and high-speed electrical cables, and mechanical components (e.g., sheet metal fabricated enclosures, overlays & machined parts), along with the skills to select and develop suppliers.
Primary Responsibilities - Own product quality from concept design through release to production and eventual End of Support phase(s)
- Recommend the process and supplier, considering metrics such as capability, fit with Synopsys commodity plans, capacity, and total cost of ownership.
- Drive DFx by engaging the cross-functional engineering team and CM/suppliers early in the design cycle to obtain valuable feedback on manufacturability, testability, opportunities for improved assembly across the supply chain, and design improvements prior to production.
- Establish, monitor, and drive quality KPI’s at the CM’s/suppliers with supporting metrics. Publish quality dashboard with succinct action plans, ownership and timelines.
- Drive periodic meetings with global CM’s/suppliers to drive quality metrics.
- Monitor product and process failures at CM’s/suppliers and lead efforts on driving the appropriate resolution with cross functional teams.
- Establish processes that identify quality excursion events in a timely manner and manage them through appropriate quality management actions. Provide technical management of excursion events with succinct communication internally and across supply chain.
- Establish processes to select, qualify, evaluate and compare/objectively rank supplier performance, and disqualification criteria.
- Analyze large data sets to identify trends and prioritize actions with suppliers. Utilize statistical tools to identify product quality variation between CM’s.
- Develop CM/suppliers to excel in all KPIs including CM/supplier owned quality, capacity, and sub-tier management.
- Empower CM/suppliers to own and propagate completion of part qualification deliverables: FAIR, PFD, pFMEA, Special process validations, Cpk studies, DFx, Operational metrics, Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) submission/approval and capacity analysis.
- Own and drive supplier variances from symptom through root cause analysis to corrective action, including succinct CAPA/SCAR documentation.
- Provide technical support for failure analysis of discrepant production components, assemblies, and field returns. Lead investigations where appropriate.
- Clearly communicate project status to key stakeholders.
- Manage supplier changes including manufacturing process changes, capacity optimization, facility changes, and new equipment qualification.
- Drive changes to Synopsys requirements as necessary by initiating and managing changes to specifications and drawings through the change order process.
- Work closely with the Test Engineering team to develop the end-of-line test process.
- Conduct MRB (Material Review Board) meetings with key stakeholders to disposition discrepant material.
Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in industrial, Manufacturing, Mechanical or Quality Engineering. Master’s degree preferred.
- 5+ years in hardware manufacturing, supplier or product quality or related field of complex electronics. EDA system or similar industry experience preferred.
- Strong experience with complex, high layer count PCB and high density PCBA assembly
- Ability to read and interpret detailed mechanical drawings containing GD&T and to communicate technical information.
- Experience in mechanical assembly, fabrication and custom cable manufacture and quality.
- Experience managing complex quality/improvement projects at global CM’s/suppliers across time zones.
- Experience in successful management of cross functional global projects
- Proficient with data collection, data analysis, quality action plan presentation, 8D root cause analysis and use of metrics to drive improvement.
- Demonstrated experience with statistical improvement utilizing DOE, Lean 6 Sigma, CpK, etc.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively across audience/management levels.
- Expertise with Microsoft Office suite. Expertise in use and knowledge of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software, Statistical analysis tools and other enterprise software.
The base salary range across the U.S. for this role is between $93,000 - $162,000. In addition, this role may be eligible for an annual bonus, equity, and other discretionary bonuses.
