PRIMARY FUNCTION Conduct research in crop improvement and provide an intersection between plant science research and K-12 education.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Research: - Manage the planting and harvesting of field and greenhouse nurseries and research trials including the coordination of fertilizer applications, pest management, and irrigation.
- Collect data and notes on research plots.
- Utilize data management software and spreadsheets for research data and to plan project goals, activities, timelines, and schedules.
- Generate corn and sorghum germplasm for research and education goals through cross pollination in the field and greenhouse.
- Process and manage research and education seed stocks, including cleaning, packaging, inventory, storage, and disposal.
- Interface with students, collaborators, farm managers, greenhouse staff, and cooperators as needed to carry out field and greenhouse nurseries and trials.
- Supervise hourly workers by creating schedules, training, checking their work.
Educational: - Develop education programming focused at the high school level, but also including some kindergarten through 8th grade curriculum.
- Teach school and youth programs both in-person and via distance learning technologies (i.e. Zoom, Webinar, etc.).
- Coordinate materials and events with schools and youth programs.
- Create outreach and educational materials for distribution.
- Develop content for project websites and social media to communicate research results.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - B.S. in biology, science education, or a related field
- Experience working in a research team setting
- Possess or be able to obtain an Illinois Driver's License
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Previous experience working with youth groups or delivering educational materials
- Background in plant science
- Knowledge of genetics
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES - Detail oriented, organized
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
- Self-directed and able to work well within clear structures of accountability
- Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas
APPOINTMENT STATUS
This is a 12-month, 100%-time academic professional position. The minimum salary for this position is $60,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements.
