Job Summary

The Database Administrator works within a team environment to maintain, optimize, and provide technical expertise for enterprise and business level databases.

The incumbent oversees Enterprise and/or Business Databases acting as a Primary Administrator for multiple servers and versions of database software and support tools which host data for enterprise and business applications along with custom data warehouses, etc. The primary database systems in our environment include Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL. The incumbent also serves as backup or secondary administrator on other database systems performing only some of the duties outlined for those specific databases. Additional Information

Through our Technology Support Center and our highly trained staff, Technology Solutions looks to improve the campus experience for all students, faculty, staff, and the rest of the campus community.

The Application Services (APPS) team develops, administers, and delivers quality application services to the University. They work on enterprise and business applications, such as PeopleSoft, Canvas, and others.
  Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$70,000 - $90,000 annual

Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree
  2. Work experience which included:
    a. Three years performing various system administration duties for assigned databases and applications including installation, configuration, and patch management
    b. Windows System Administrator and MS SQL Database Administrator experience at either the Mid-Level (3-7 years of experience) or the Senior-Level (7-10 years of experience)
  3. Understanding of relational database concepts, queries (SQL), and ability to use 1 or more common query/reporting tools (SQL Server Management Server (SSMS), SQL Developer, TOAD, Cognos, SSRS, Crystal Reports)
  4. Knowledge of IT Infrastructure Hardware as it relates to DB architecture such as Servers, Storage, Networking, Backups
  5. Working knowledge of relational and dimensional data structures
  6. System Administrator understanding of common technologies used by database applications such as backups firewall settings, and event monitoring
  7. A keen interest in learning new tools and methods
  8. Demonstrated skills
    a. strong customer service skills along with a desire for achieving excellence in customer satisfaction, process, and product quality and reliability.
    b. strong problem-solving skills
    c. excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to conduct internal and external meetings
    d. strong project, analysis, and research skills
  9. Ability to:

    c. clearly communicate complex technical concepts verbally and in writing to management, technical staff, and customers in terms appropriate for each audience including developing good documentation
    d. analyze large amounts of detailed information, quickly understand complex issues, and break information down into smaller, more manageable pieces
    e. leverage Microsoft Word, Visio, and Excel
    f. adapt quickly to new technologies and changing business requirements
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Three years of experience:
    a. supporting software applications that leverage databases, especially higher education administrative systems
    b. with other relational database technologies, especially PostgreSQL 13 and higher and MySQL 8.0 or higher. Experience to include installation, configuration, upgrade, and patch management of PostgreSQL and MySQL.
    c. with Windows operating system script languages (such as PowerShell) for systems and database administration
    d. with Windows failover cluster and advance firewall configuration
    e. in Linux system administration and Linux firewall configuration with software installation (via yum or other repositories).
    f. with Source Control, Defect Management, and Incident Management Software Tools
    g. with clustering, load balancing, mirroring, log shipping and replication technologies to provide high availability systems
    h. supporting large ERPs or Applications that must support many users
  2. Vendor certifications such as Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) or Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA)
  3. Foundation qualification in Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)
Work Hours

Core Hours: 8:00am-4:30pm Monday through Friday; occasional weekend and evening hours as business needs dictate

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions.
