Job Description and Duties

Under the supervision of the Education Administrator I of the Professional Learning Support and Monitoring Office (PLSMO) and working cooperatively with program units and managers throughout the California Department of Education, the Education Programs Consultant works as a team member and/or independently in assigned areas of responsibility or projects to support the development and dissemination of educational programs in support of the Every Student Succeeds Act, standards implementation and provides leadership in mathematics, science, and computer science education and supports the other program areas of the PLSMO. Travel is required.

Develop and monitor science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) program guidelines and responsibilities, including the Educator Workforce Investment Grant Program. Provide program assistance in aligning staff development and curriculum content with local standards, effective instructional practices, assessment, and accountability systems. Participate in cooperation with other consultants in the development of programs as detailed in federal and/or state guidelines. Oversee Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching; recruit teachers, assist nominees, and facilitate selection and recognition for the finalists. Prepare documents for the State Superintendent of Public Instruction's announcement of finalists and awardees. Coordinate the recognition event of finalists and awardees with the California Science Teachers Association.

Participate in mathematics leadership organizations such as the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics, the California Mathematics Council, the Mathematics Curriculum and Instruction Steering Committee (CISC) of the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA), the Mathematics Collaboration Committee, and the Mathematics Community of Practice. Stay informed regarding current state and national educational issues and trends in mathematics curriculum, instruction, standards, assessment, accountability, and resources.

Participate in science leadership organizations such as the Science CISC of the CCSESA and the Science Community of Practice. Stay informed regarding current state trends in science curriculum, instruction, standards, assessment, accountability, and resources.

Write, review, analyze, and prepare staff development and educational materials, reports, advisories, informational and assistance packets, legislation, and other documents for statewide and local dissemination. Provide updates to the field regarding STEM-related activities.

Working Conditions

This position is headquartered in Sacramento and may be eligible for a hybrid telework schedule for eligible applicants residing in California. A hybrid telework schedule includes working remotely and physically reporting to the office.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:


Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as analytical and organizational skills. Experience in a kindergarten through grade twelve educational setting and/or working with school districts, county offices of education, colleges, universities and/or other educational service providers. Knowledge and expertise in standards-based curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development in schools and districts. Ability to work effectively in both independent and diverse multi-task team environments.
