Job description
At WQAD, "We. Track. Storms." And we're looking for an engaging and dynamic meteorologist to join our outstanding Storm Track 8 weather team to share that same passion!
Weather here in the Midwest can carry many weather extremes from tornado outbreaks, intense heat waves, blizzards and strong arctic outbreaks to even the most soothing spring days and vibrant colors of autumn.
We're looking for a candidate who is not only enthusiastic about presenting the weather but astounding at telling a story on all digital platforms.
This position will require someone who can become extremely comfortable and efficient with building graphics on the MAX system. The right candidate will have strong communication skills, an engaging personality, a team player, and a passion for winning severe weather.
This person will be an integral part of severe weather coverage and must be capable of sustaining long-form continuous team coverage for severe weather events.
This position requires someone that embraces new technology and is willing to explore new ways to present a weather story, including understanding the importance of community involvement by speaking with schools and other community functions. Your primary responsibility will be weekends and weekday fill-in.
Responsibilities:
- Produce clean and informative graphics
- The ability to provide accurate weather forecasts for all station platforms (TV, radio, WQAD web page and social media)
- Knowledge of the MAX system, the ability and dedication to learn the system
- Interact and engage with the audience in a professional manner
- The ability to cover severe weather with knowledge of forecasting and computer modeling.
- Create original digital content
- Be interactive on all social media platforms
- To assist the team in severe weather coverage online (Facebook Live), reporting from the field, and coordinating with reporters and anchors
- Make public appearances on behalf of the weather team, school visits, parades, community events
- Be engaged in the community as a member of the weather team
- Ability to work various shifts including mornings and evenings
- Exceptional online and social media skills
- Be a team player within the department and the station
Requirements:
- Possess a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology
- Broadcast experience preferred
- Exceptional writing skills
Travel: Rarely: less than 10%
Work Environment Set: Office: normally performed in a typical interior/office environment
Physical Demands Set: Sedentary work: Involves sitting most of the time; walking, lifting, bending, standing, etc.
