Position Details: Summary of Duties: Duties will include providing counseling, case management, and crisis support services for WSU Health Sciences Spokane undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Participate in the development and implementation of outreach programming, and trainings for students, faculty and staff as directed. Maintain timely clinical records and documentation for students who may need academic disability accommodation as required by law, rules and policies.
Duties & Responsibilities Include: Counseling: 65%
- Provides culturally sensitive individual and group counseling over a broad range of issues.
- Conducts intakes and provides counseling for undergraduate, graduate and professional health sciences students both in-person and virtually.
- Provides crisis management.
- Maintains clinical records as required by Washington State Administrative Code. Ensures all records are kept confidential and that Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) laws are maintained by self and counseling staff
- Participates in clinical supervision and consultation with clinical supervisor and counseling team.
- Makes referrals to off-campus therapists, clinics, psychiatrists or hospitals when appropriate.
- Provides evening and weekend counseling on rare occasion.
Mental Health Educational Programming: 30%
- Helps develop and present educational programming to students, faculty and staff.
- Adapts programming to meet the needs of the audience.
- Facilitates training for students, faculty, and staff in support of recognizing and responding to students experiencing a mental health crisis.
Other: 5%
- Other duties as assigned.
- Participates in Student Affairs and other university committees.
Required Qualifications: Positions require a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, or related field and the ability to become independently licensed as a mental health professional in the State of Washington within one (1) year of employment.
Additional Requirements: Washington State independent mental health professional as defined in
RCW 71.05.020 means an individual practicing within the mental health professional's statutory scope of practice who is:
- A mental health counselor (LMHC), mental health counselor associate (LMHCA), marriage and family therapist (LMFT), or marriage and family therapist associate (LMFTA), as defined in chapter 18.225 RCW .
- At this time, we are unable to accept an Associate Social Worker license.
Demonstrated experience counseling 'high-risk' difficulties (e.g. suicide, eating disorders, substance abuse, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)).
Demonstrated experience with public speaking, presenting to small and large groups, and development of training materials. Willing to become certified in a variety of best practice trainings and approaches.
Demonstrated experience in providing crisis response, intervention and referral services.
Occasional travel is required.
May work flexible hours including evenings and weekends on rare occasion.
Preferred Qualifications: Be an independently licensed mental health counselor, social worker, or related in the State of Washington at time of hire.
Counseling/Clinical experience within a university population.
Experience and interest in providing services to diverse student populations (e.g. students of color, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and/or Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) students, international students, veterans).
Certified Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Suicide Prevention Trainer to provide trainings to students, staff and faculty.

Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
