The Department of Anthropology offers a full range of courses in archaeology, biological, social, cultural, psychological, political, and linguistic and climate change anthropology subject areas. Anthropology stands at the nexus between the social sciences, biological sciences, and humanities. It is dedicated to understanding the worldwide diversity of social institutions and cultural traditions, past and present, as well as to studying our nearest nonhuman relatives. The Anthropology Department's undergraduate program serves approximately 250+ majors, 22 faculty, and 10+ visiting lecturers per academic year.
The Global Health Program (GHP) is a newer interdisciplinary undergraduate degree program at UC San Diego, beginning in Fall 2014. It is a field of study directly concerned with achieving equity in health for people worldwide. The program has faculty participation from the Schools of Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Arts & Humanities, the School of Medicine, the Rady School of Management, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The Global Health Program is administered through the Department of Anthropology and currently serves a population of 380+ majors and over 200+ minors.
In conjunction with the Administrative Officer, the Student Services Advisor 2 is responsible for all advising aspects and assist with the programmatic aspects of the Anthropology undergraduate program. At times, the incumbent will assist with the Global Health Program with advising and other programmatic needs.
Some of the responsibilities may include the following: Academic Advising; course selection and scheduling; knowledge of campus resources for student referral; Outreach and Community Visibility through events or through social media; Coordinate or assist with Anthropology & Global Health events on various topics relating to student interests; responsible for Triton & Transfer Triton Day; perform basic fiscal administration tasks, and suggest recommendations for short-term and long-term goals and objectives for the program.
Applies professional Student Services concepts. Provides varied student services to students, faculty, and department / school / college management. Works on moderately complex issues. Receives assistance on more complex issues.
Must be able to work occasional weekends/evenings for recruitment and special events. Reliable transportation needed for attendance at colleges, fairs, etc.
Experience and knowledge of academic advising and counseling techniques. Demonstrated ability to counsel and advise students on matters related to the department's undergraduate program, curricula and UCSD's policies and procedures, and UCDC.
Knowledge of University processes and procedures. Theoretical and practical knowledge in policies and procedures relating to undergraduate students and curriculum administration, to advise students, faculty, administrators and others about academic policies and requirements and to implement the department's goals and objectives for the program.
Understanding of University rules and regulations. Ability to interpret requirements and procedures at UCSD, including enrollment, registration, grading and graduation.
Interpersonal skills. Demonstrated understanding of the philosophy of quality service and group process, with proven aptitude for working as part of a team. Experience and skills for effective one-on-one counseling and active listening. Demonstrated skill in problem solving and conflict resolution.
Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Ability to interact effectively with people from different backgrounds and nationalities. Ability to maintain confidentiality with faculty and students, and to handle sensitive matters with tact.
Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking. Ability to recognize and respond to the pressures and needs of the university student.
