REPRESENTED SPECIALIST SERIES FISCAL YEAR . 'Off-scale salaries', i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $51,300-65,900.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: March 1, 2024
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for 11 months, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description The Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a
SCIPP ATLAS Operations Specialist , with duties similar to that of technician or engineer in the industrial sector. SCIPP is a pioneer in the development of silicon detectors for elementary particles with expertise in both silicon micro-strip and pixel detectors and fast timing detectors, as well as radiation tolerant readout electronics for such detector systems. Some of the major projects in which SCIPP is presently involved include the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland, particularly the upgrade of ATLAS for the High Luminosity operation; the ePIC nuclear physics experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory; the development of advanced sensors for fast timing and high repetition-rate applications; and microelectrode array systems for neurobiology.
Under the direction of Associate Professor Michael Hance, the specialist will support physicists in the US-ATLAS collaboration through the following activities: develop tutorials for US-ATLAS computing facilities; support training and topical workshops on behalf of the US-ATLAS Operations Program; and develop documentation to assist US-ATLAS scientists in data analysis and software development tasks.
Applicants with experience in any of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:
- Experience with analyzing of experimental data using Jupyter notebooks.
- Software development using git, docker containers, or machine learning tools.
- Experience in advanced computing topics like high-performance computing or grid computing.
- Advanced degree in physics, engineering or a related field.
