Academic Advisor - Urban and Regional Planning College of Fine and Applied Arts University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Job Summary This position is responsible for providing advising and support to undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. The position serves as the primary academic advisor for students the Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies and Planning Program (BAUSP), Minor in Urban Planning, 4+1 program in BAUSP, the Master of Urban Planning, and Master of Sustainable Urban Management programs. The position works closely with program directors and departmental faculty to troubleshoot problems and barriers to student success, and serves as a professional development resource for students.
Duties & Responsibilities - Undergraduate and Graduate Student Advising
1. Serve as an advocate and resource for students in the Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies and Planning (BAUSP) program, Minor in Urban Planning program, 4+1 program, Master of Urban Planning program, and Master of Sustainable Urban Management program, and maintain frequent, systematic contact with those students.
2. Advise current BAUSP students on the fulfillment of degree requirements and other academic needs (to include review of: undergraduate study abroad coursework; transfer student applications; and minor applications). Maintain thorough record-keeping of all student contacts.
3. Advise current Master's students on the fulfillment of degree requirements and other academic needs.
4. Advise incoming undergraduate first-year and transfer students during summer orientation and new student registration.
5. Work with the Associate Director for Academic Programs, Director of Undergraduate Studies, Director of Graduate Studies, and with departmental faculty to monitor student progress and identify students in need of additional support or whose behaviors align with early alerts who require referral to other campus offices and resources.
6. Maintain familiarity with departmental and university undergraduate and graduate program procedures and work with the undergraduate and graduate program committees to ensure respective program policies are in compliance with those of the University.
7. Use social media and virtual technologies in communication and delivery of services to students.
8. Support the collection of student outcomes data for departmental evaluation, accreditation, and Illini Success.
- Undergraduate Recruitment and Outreach 1. Support BAUSP student recruitment, including promoting programs at campus events and meetings (Majors and Minors Fair, recruitment and yield events, etc.)
2. Coordinate departmental orientation and recruitment activities such as departmental check-in activities and welcome sessions.
3. Serve on the BAUSP and BSSD 4+1 program admissions committee and provide necessary support, including retrieving and reviewing student data.
4. Assist with coordination of Urban Planning Ambassadors.
5. Consult with Director for Academic Programs on review of intercollegiate transfers (ICTs).
- Undergraduate and Graduate Student Professional Development 1. Support students in developing career goals for both U.S. and home country job searches.
2. Work collaboratively with faculty to develop, promote, manage, and evaluate career development programs and tools for career searches.
3. Serve as the primary administrator of the departmental jobs listserv.
4. Build connections with alumni, professionals, and employers, and leverage connections to foster professional development opportunities for students, internships, graduate capstones, and employment opportunities.
5. Support international students through knowledge of OPT requirements, the H1B Visa Process, international employer recruiting activities, and international career management.
6. Support Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) in the department.
- Other General Duties 1. Serve on the Undergraduate Program committee and Graduate Program committee providing necessary administrative support including retrieving and compiling student data.
2. Assist in the general administrative planning and resource allocation.
3. Participate in staff, committee, and other meetings as assigned.
4. Perform evening, weekend, and business/conference travel as requested.
5. Assist with meeting operational needs by performing other appropriate related duties.
Required Qualifications: - Bachelor's Degree required.
- Three years of experience in the planning profession or programs in higher education.
Preferred Qualifications: - Master's degree in urban planning or related field or in higher education.
- Knowledge on the substance of the academic and professional disciplines of urban and regional planning.
- Experience in an advising or student-centered environment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Employee must have a good working knowledge of academic program requirements and administrative procedures and rules necessary to administer the degree programs.
- With minimal supervision, this position sets daily work priorities, sets self-imposed deadlines, and acquires the necessary assistance in completing work in a timely manner.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- In-depth knowledge of the requirements of the Bachelor of Arts in Urban Planning, Minor in Urban Planning, Master of Urban Planning, and Master of Sustainable Urban Management programs.
- Excellent organizational skills, initiative, and accuracy.
- Exceptional Interpersonal skills.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Minimum salary for this position is $50,000 annually. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
