GENERAL DUTIES

• Under supervision, performs miscellaneous clerical, administrative, research or other work related to the operation of a College or other unit where such work is required on a part-time basis or for a period of limited duration.
• There is one Assignment Level for this position. All personnel perform related work. This specification describes typical assignments; related duties may be assigned as

needed.

• Maximum tenure for any employee in this hourly position is 1040 hours per year.
• Performs routine clerical work; may answer and attend to telephone calls; maintain records,

operate office machines (such as copier), sort and distribute mail, issue keys and identity cards,

act as messenger, and perform related tasks as required.

• Types letters, memoranda, charts, and similar materials.
• Acts as cashier.
• Assists in statistical or research activities. May collect and compile data, code data for computer entry, perform data entry, and run computer reports.
• Performs clerical library work, such as sorting and shelving books, performing data entry into library systems, or binding books and periodicals.
• Assists in instructional programs, including tutoring and assisting students in areas such as reading and mathematics. May assist in speech and hearing therapy, provide musical accompaniment, and/or distribute and collect physical education equipment.
• Enters and maintains departmental records such as inventory control records, rosters, directories, and schedules.
• May operate computers, computer software, and other electronic equipment in performing assigned tasks.

The Continuing and Professional Education Center (CPEC) at CUNY York College is strategically-aligned to continue the College's 25+ year mission to serve Southeast Queens with offering non-degree foundational education, career training programs personal enrichment courses. Students choose CPEC for a variety of trainings geared towards the sectors of Health, Business and Technology.

York College ??? CPEC is relaunching its Learn to Swim (LTS) programming and seeking qualified Lifeguards to monitor the safety and well-being of swimming patrons of all ages in the Aquatic facility for adult and youth classes offered during daytime, evening and weekend hours.

This position reports to the Director of Adult & Continuing Education and the Aquatics Director.

CPEC Lifeguard Responsibilities Include:

• Enforcing all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations according to York College Athletics standards.
• Recognizing and effectively responding to emergencies in accordance with the facility's emergency action plans.
• Monitoring the pool and pool/deck; reporting any pertinent information regarding maintenance to the Aquatics Director.
• Recording class participation numbers and completing daily activity reports.
• Supervising pool patrons to ensure all safety protocols are followed; providing information to swimmers and calling out warnings to swimmers in imminent danger. Enforcing rules for pool patron safety.
• Testing pool water; recording results and report imbalances to Aquatics Director.
• Maintaining a clean and safe environment in and around aquatic facility.
• Ensuring all pool equipment is safely stored, the pool deck is cleared of equipment and any lost items are recorded and secured.
• Setting up the pool for various activities such as recreational swim, classes, etc.
• Arriving in proper lifeguard uniform; prepared, alert and ready to respond to emergencies at all times.
• Attending mandatory in-service training and staff meetings as scheduled.
• Performing rescues in the event of drowning and swimming accidents.
• Administering CPR/AED/First Aid in the event of an emergency.
• Teaching swimming techniques and safety education to new swimmers.
• Successfully pass and maintain up-to-date, First Aid, CPR/AED and professional certifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must demonstrate sufficient skills to perform the duties of the assigned tasks.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications & Skills:

• Experience as a Lifeguard.
• Must possess current and valid American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
• Must possess current and valid CPR/AED/ First Aid certification.
• Maintain a positive and energetic attitude toward performing job duties and working with staff members.
• Demonstrate professional decorum at all times while representing York College & CPEC.
• Work to ensure the ultimate health, welfare and safety of all users of the aquatics facility.
• Working proficiency and communication skills in verbal and written English.

COMPENSATION

Hourly rate: $18.00 - $21.00

Part-time employees must meet a weekly or semester work hour criteria to be eligible for health benefits. Health benefits are also extended to retirees who meet the eligibility criteria.
