Research Project Manager | The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Location

Chapel Hill, NC | United States

Job description

Vacancy ID: NF0007791

Position Summary/Description:

Come join a nationally recognized team in drug overdose prevention! We are hiring a Project Manager who will oversee operations of a street drug testing public service and a suite of scientific studies. We seek a highly organized and detail-oriented individual who can anticipate team needs and ensure timely completion of tasks.

We strive to do work that is meaningful and has direct community benefit. Our team is oriented less towards traditional research, and more science in service. Accordingly, our work environment is fast-paced and outward facing. We adhere to rigorous scientific principles and maintain a high level of customer service. We are searching for someone who has academic grants administration experience and/or business services experience, preferably both. We are rooted in drug harm reduction principles, so an acceptance of these concepts is critical. We stress that both pre-award (proposal development) and post-award (grants management) experience are required.

The Project Manager position has two functional roles. The first role is to ensure smooth operations for a nationwide mail-in street drug testing program ( including managing team effort, mailing logistics, contracting, and invoicing. The second role is co-leadership in pre-award proposals and post-award management of a suite of grants/contracts from government and philanthropic foundations (

The first role (approximately 70% effort) supports a mail-in service working with 150+ public health programs in 30+ states. Street drug samples are sent to our campus lab for chemical analysis, in compliance with controlled substances and shipping regulations. Our chemists analyze the samples and report results on our website. To collect drug samples, we pioneered a mail-in sample collection kit that we mail to programs, and are then mailed back to our laboratory. The kit contains a dozen pieces, which are assembled by other team members; the Project Manager will be responsible for ensuring inventory is steady and that kits are sent out on time. Since this operates on a fee-for-service basis, the Project Manager will have primary responsibility for contracting, invoicing, and record keeping.

In the second role (approximately 30% effort), the Project Manager will support scientific collaboration with government officials, other UNC departments, and community groups. This suite of studies is also centered on overdose prevention, but involve large datasets and field data collection separate from the aforementioned street drug samples. The Project Manager will work closely with the Principal Investigator (Dr. Nabarun Dasgupta) to operationalize these research efforts. Depending on their level of contribution, the Project Manager will be invited for co-authorship to scientific publications.

Our team's work has been featured in The New York Times, CNN , ABC News, TIME , and other national news outlets. This is a high-profile unit, with lofty standards for timeliness and quality. We strongly respect vacation time and weekends, but urgent requests will sometimes require nimble task management to get the job done.

This is a full-time, on-campus position in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Project Manager is expected to be physically present in the office at least 4 days per week during standard working hours. Our team currently has 6 full-time employees, and 8 students, part-time employees, and contractors. We are distributed in two different buildings on campus (office and laboratory), so this position will help facilitate within-team communication. Interfacing with external collaborators will be routine, including local and national harm reduction programs, public health advocacy groups, health officials, medical clinics, funders, and universities. Occasional travel is envisioned, including to scientific conferences, site visits, and governmental meetings.

Education and Experience:

* Experience in biomedical sciences and/or operations of harm reduction programs.
* Experience with the logistics of submitting scientific manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals.
* Competency with workflow management software (Jira, Asana, etc.)
* Experience producing short videos, social media or blog posts, newsletters, etc.
* Experience with design of surveys and data collection.
