DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Mathematics Department is a dynamic unit with 61 faculty, approximately 330 additional non-FTEs in various instructional and research titles. These academics work on a broad range research funded from a diverse range of federal, state, and private agencies. The department is comprised of 17 career staff, and 167 Master's and Ph.D. students. All working together to generate high-caliber research in a broad range of fields and provides an outstanding graduate program that attracts top-ranked students who contribute to the department's academic reputation. The department maintains a large undergraduate course of study that prepares pure and applied majors (over 2400) in Mathematics, as well as 57 other majors across the campus, with the strong fundamental background in mathematics needed to succeed in a variety of career options. The faculty are engaged in a vigorous research program with an average of 72 active awards in many interdisciplinary areas totaling approximately $20M/Yr. and an instructional program that enrolls approximately 30,000 graduates and undergraduates per year. As the fundamental language of science, Mathematics is an essential intellectual tool required by a trained workforce to create the technological advances of the future.

The department is the home of The Center for Computational Mathematics (CCoM) consists of a broad and diverse group of faculty, researchers, and students, who share a common interest in the mathematical aspects of computation. And the home of the Director of the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project an intersegmental education project in California.

With a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Assistant Dean in the division, the incumbent serves as Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and principal advisor to the chair of a complex, interdisciplinary academic department engaged in research and offering B.A., B.S., M.A, M.S., and Ph.D. programs. The CAO is the principal advisor to the department chair and faculty regarding the development, implementation, and assessment of short- and long-term strategic plans, budgets, and financial performance. The CAO is responsible for management, strategic planning, and leadership of all administrative activities in the Department including fiscal management of departmental budgets, contracts, grants, and gifts from a variety of extramural sources, payroll, academic/staff/student human resources, labor relations, health and safety, administrative information systems, graduate and undergraduate student affairs, internal controls and risk management, and administrative computing. The CAO oversees the management of computational laboratories, specialized sub-units, and the inventories of all departmental space and facilities, as well as their assignment, utilization, and safety procedures. Exercises maximum initiative and leadership within the parameters of Department and University policies and regulations to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Department.
