Job Description:

  • United Health System is seeking a highly qualified Operating Room RN to join our dynamic team in Concord MA. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in ensuring the health and well-being of employees within various Operating Room settings. Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of a Operating Room RN:

  1. Preoperative Assessment: Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients scheduled for surgical procedures, including medical history review, physical assessments, and verification of surgical site and procedure.
  2. Surgical Preparation: Prepare patients for surgery by ensuring proper positioning on the operating table, verifying surgical site markings, and assisting with preoperative preparations such as skin preparation and draping.
  3. Instrumentation and Equipment: Prepare and set up surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies needed for the surgical procedure. Ensure all equipment is functioning properly and available for use during the procedure.
  4. Assistance to Surgeon: Provide assistance to the surgical team, including the surgeon, surgical assistant, and scrub technician, during the surgical procedure. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide instruments, supplies, and other assistance as required.
  5. Patient Safety: Maintain a safe and sterile environment in the operating room. Adhere to infection control protocols, aseptic techniques, and surgical site identification procedures to prevent surgical site infections and ensure patient safety.
  6. Medication Administration: Administer medications as ordered by the surgeon or anesthesiologist, including preoperative antibiotics, anesthetic agents, and intraoperative medications. Monitor patients' responses to medications and report any adverse reactions to the anesthesia provider.
  7. Intraoperative Documentation: Accurately document intraoperative events, including surgical counts, specimen handling, and intraoperative medications administered. Ensure documentation is complete, timely, and in compliance with regulatory standards.
  8. Communication and Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with the surgical team, anesthesia team, and other healthcare providers involved in the patient's care. Communicate patient status, surgical progress, and any concerns or changes in the patient's condition to the surgical team and anesthesia provider.
  9. Postoperative Care: Provide postoperative care to patients in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) or surgical recovery area. Monitor patients' vital signs, assess surgical incisions, and administer postoperative medications as ordered.
  10. Patient Education: Educate patients and their families about postoperative care instructions, including wound care, activity restrictions, pain management techniques, and follow-up appointments.
  11. Quality Improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes, safety, and satisfaction in the perioperative setting. Contribute to the development and implementation of evidence-based practices and protocols.

Qualifications:

  1. Registered Nurse License: Hold an active RN license in the state of MA. Advanced certification in preoperative nursing (e.g., CNOR) may be preferred.
  2. Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is preferred. Completion of a perioperative nursing course or certification program is advantageous.
  3. Experience: Previous experience in perioperative nursing, including circulating and scrubbing roles in the operating room. New graduates may be considered for entry-level positions with appropriate training and orientation.
