NATIVE FOODWAYS COORDINATOR

Permanent Part-time
Non-Exempt-Hourly
Compensation: $27.00 – $28.00 per hour

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Core to the implementation of The Cultural Conservancy’s (TCC) organizational mission is our Native Foodways Program. The Native Foodways Program is TCC’s flagship program and is an important part of our whole organization and identity. Working to support the food sovereignty of the Bay Area Native community region, as well as contribute to the larger Indigenous Food Sovereignty and Food Justice movements regionally, nationally, and globally, the Native Foodways Program is growing with our land project, Heron Shadow.

The Native Foodways Program Coordinator is a permanent part-time position that supports and coordinates the development and implementation of the vision and goals of the Foodways Program, in particular our regional food justice program. The Foodways Program Coordinator reports directly to the Chief Program Officer (CPO) and works in close collaboration with the Native Foodways Manager and Farm Manager.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Food Distribution – work with Native Foodways Manager to coordinate and support TCC’s food distribution / food justice program and partnerships:

• Coordinate and maintain a local community network for food, seed and plant distribution
  Coordinate food distribution delivery schedule and communication with partner organizations and farms
• Weekly preparation, driving, and delivery of food, seeds, plants, and medicine to community partner organizations and families; including pickups from farm partners
• Maintain food distribution log and documentation of all Foodways related activities
• Assist in the distribution program feedback and data assessment including partners and direct community to assess foods, resources, education requests in Native Foodways, food sovereignty/food justice, and decolonizing our diets

2. Foodways Education – support Native Foodways educational events and workshops:

• Support Native Foodways educational events and workshops, including Spring Planting and Fall Harvesting gatherings, community workdays and events, student visits, youth workshops, cooking classes, and other relevant and requested educational programs
• Engage in professional development relevant to your role, growing work in the Native Foodways world including attending workshops, conferences, and community events

3. Land Tending – support TCC’s land and farm work:

• Support farming/growing/land tending activities on the ground across all sites as directed
  Participate in TCC farm operations and partner meetings

Skills & Experience

• Professional or lived experience with Indigenous food sovereignty and implementation of programs that serve/work with Native communities
• Understanding of and commitment to Indigenous issues of food justice, ecocultural health and healing, and revitalization of traditional learning spaces
• Ability to work independently and prioritize duties: must work well under deadlines, balance multiple and competing demands and follow projects through to completion on time.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and respectful collaborator, with a desire to work in a team-oriented environment, proactively communicating changes and progress
• Adaptability and flexibility; ability to navigate in a rapidly growing organization and constantly evolving work environment
• Superb written and clear oral communication skills, including presentation abilities and speaking in groups and educational sharing settings.
• Experience and interest supporting and learning from Native and Indigenous youth and Elders, and cultivating inter-generational educational experiences
• Excellent planning, strategic, critical, and creative thinking skills
• Experienced in Excel, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite
• BA degree preferred

Eligibility

• Reliable personal transportation for regular travel and food distribution to/from our land bases in Sebastopol (Sonoma County) and Novato (Marin County) with a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and clean driving record
• Readiness to walk, drive, lift and carry heavy items (up to 50 lbs.)
• Available for weekend community events when needed
• Willingness to travel for conferences and workshops

Recordkeeping 

• The timely submission of reports and timesheets need to be consistently submitted on time, as requested

Location, Compensation and Schedule

• Work location will be at Heron Shadow, our land base in Sebastopol
• Permanent part-time, non-exempt, 24 hours/week
• Compensation $27-$28/hour
• Insurance, benefits, and mileage reimbursement for work related travel to our other work locations and food deliveries
