The Materials Science in Radiation and Dynamics Extremes Group (MST-8) of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) invites you to join our team providing support for our National Security Mission and discover why we attract the best and brightest minds in the world. The MST-8 Deputy Group Leader (DGL) will assist the Group Leader (GL) in providing scientific and technical leadership for the group, division and Laboratory in the areas of dynamic extremes of materials, nuclear energy, scattering science, and radiation effects on materials. The DGL will also assist the GL with managing our research portfolio and safety/security operations. The successful applicant for this position will have the authority and responsibility for operational matters. The DGL will assist the GL in being an effective steward of the materials capabilities in these areas, ensure programmatic needs are fulfilled, provide fiscal stewardship, maintain operational excellence, and develop a strategy for program development and growth and engagement with LANL managers and national program offices.
The DGL will be supported half time (0.5 FTE) on overhead and is expected to support the remainder of their time through independent programmatic research and/or other program management activities.
Additional goals and responsibilities are:
- Help develop and maintain a suite of nuclear energy and radiation damage programs centered around our national program roles, unique materials modeling expertise and the Ion Beam Materials Lab (IBML).
- Help MST-8 staff to interface with LANL program offices such as the Weapons Physics Office of Engineering and Technology Maturation, the Weapons Physics Office of Experimental Sciences, the Office of Science, the Office of Applied Energy, and the Office of Civilian Nuclear Programs.
- Help manage the Fuels Research Laboratory (FRL) for nuclear energy programs.
- Work with the GL in managing and operating the Electron Microscopy Laboratory (EML) to support materials science across the Laboratory; also, help to develop a long-term strategy for enhancing LANL capabilities and leadership in electron microscopy.
- Foster excellence in neutron and x-ray scattering science and develop a scattering science pathway for future capabilities.
- Help develop, establish and maintain recognition of a unique materials modeling team that bridges experiment and modeling and complements the capabilities in T and CCS Divisions.
- Help oversee the design and construction of The Low Enriched Fuel Fabrication Facility (LEFFF), an expanded development capability for low-enriched fuel research.
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: - Demonstrated experience in operational management and support.
- Record of successful scientific research, including peer-reviewed publications in at least one of the scientific areas critical for this portfolio, i.e., radiation damage, materials science, mechanical engineering, and nuclear engineering.
- Scientific leadership and management skills, as demonstrated by the ability to organize, lead, and administer scientific projects and coordinate team activities.
- Strong record of effective written and verbal communication skills, as evidenced by a high-quality, peer-reviewed publication record, as well as presentations at professional conferences, seminars, or briefings.
- Excellent interpersonal and personnel management skills, including a demonstrated commitment to professional development and mentoring.
- Financial management experience and demonstrated commitment to good business practices.
- Record of commitment to safety, security, and diversity in the workplace.
- Demonstrated ability to foster and encourage open communications, and to delegate both technical and administrative tasks successfully.
- Ability to obtain a "Q" Clearance.
Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications : - Experience with funding agencies including National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Energy (DOE) {e.g., Office of Science (DOE-SC), Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE), Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (DOE-EERE), Department of Defense (DoD), and other customer agencies and educational institutions.}
- Demonstrated ability to grow new programs. Demonstrated ability to grow new programs in global security is of particular interest.
- Familiarity with LDRD, Office of Science, and Threat Reduction programs at LANL and throughout the complex.
- Formal project and management training.
- Familiarity with administrative policies and procedures, preferably at LANL or in an equivalent DOE institution.
Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. Position commitment : Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
- Eligibility requirements : To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test : The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position : Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program : Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
