Position Summary
The Tacoma Public Library has received a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Committee (NHPRC) to digitize and make available the photo archive of the Tacoma News Tribune. The Northwest Room at Tacoma Public Library seeks applicants for a Project Assistant to work on this project for an 18-month period. This is a full time, benefitted position.
About the Northwest Room: Located in the original 1904 Carnegie library building, the Northwest Room is the home of Tacoma Public Library’s rare and unique holdings related to the history, people, places, and built environment of Tacoma, Washington and the South Sound region. Our extensive collections include photographs, newspapers, family and personal papers, maps, blueprints, and more.

Responsibilities Include:
Digitizing photographs from the photo archive of the Tacoma News Tribune
Physically re-housing photos in archival quality sleeves and folders
Creating descriptions for digitized photographs
Uploading photographs to the Library’s Northwest ORCA database
Assisting with planning outreach, exhibits, and events around the digitized photographs
Qualifications
One year of customer service experience.
Desirable Qualifications:
Library or non-profit experience
Bilingual skills in English and another language relevant to the Tacoma community
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in an archive, library, historical society, or museum
Experience with digitization or metadata creation
Interest in or familiarity with the history of Tacoma, Washington and the South Sound region
Education in library and information Science, public history, museum studies, or related field

Paid leave: Library Employees are entitled to receive paid holidays, and Personal Time Off (PTO).
Retirement: All employees of the Library except part-time Pages, temporary employees, and certain project employees, are included in the City of Tacoma Employees' Retirement System. The Tacoma Public Library is not a department of the City of Tacoma and the Library's employees are not employees of the City. The Library is a separate entity with its own governing body. The Library's governing body is the Tacoma Public Library Board of Trustees.
Employees of the City of Tacoma who accept employment with the Tacoma Public Library will lose their City of Tacoma employee seniority. They will also find that their leave accruals, and some of the benefits enjoyed as employees of the City of Tacoma do not carry over when they are hired for a position with the Tacoma Public Library.
