Salary range: A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach a two-credit course is $3,313 - $3,841 (based on salary points 1 - 6), please see the UCSC Salary Scales and refer to the
Non-senate Instructional (NSI) Unit 18 Pre-six Lecturer Academic Year scale. Instructional Workload Credit (IWC) valuation may vary and the course salary will be adjusted accordingly. Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year (see Summer Session Faculty and Lecturer Pay ).
Percent time: Part-time (15% )
Anticipated start: We are currently seeking to fill a vacancy for Summer 2024, but there may be other vacancies during the 2024-25 academic year. Appointments are contingent on the hiring units instructional need and the availability of funding.
This recruitment is valid for initial appointments made in Summer Session 2024 through spring quarter 2025. Initial appointments with effective dates outside of this recruitment period will require an alternative open recruitment.
Position duration: Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Position Description The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Horticulture Lecturer who may be appointed to teach during the academic year or summer session. This position is specifically designated for teaching BIOE 16, Introduction to Horticulture, which covers the production of indoor crops and landscape plants, providing students with a working knowledge of how light, temperature, water, fertilizers, and soilless media interact in a controlled environment. It also covers pest management and propagation. The students develop practical skills and familiarity with agricultural technology while mastering basic principles in plant biology.
An instructor with practical horticulture experience is paramount to the success of the course and outstanding candidates with professional experience in the following specialties are encouraged to apply: propagation, restoration planting, commercial horticulture, plant collections, agroecology, plant disease diagnostics, greenhouse management, and/or nursery management. Experience working with a wide range of plant species is beneficial.
We are especially interested in applicants who have a record of supervising/mentoring in an academic environment or overseeing undergraduate student internships, demonstrated experience teaching horticulture, and/or completed specialized coursework in plant biology and horticulture.

- A bachelors degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in plant science, education, biology, or another relevant field.
- A minimum of three years of professional experience working in horticulture or plant production.
