T&D Monitoring and Diagnostics Engineer

Location

Tualatin, OR | United States

Job description

At PGE, our work involves dreaming about, planning for, and realizing a smarter, cleaner, more enduring Oregon neighborhood. Its core to our DNA and we haven’t stopped since we started in 1888. We energize lives, strengthen communities and drive advancements in energy that promote social, economic and environmental progress. We’re always on the lookout for people passionate about leading and being a part of teams that are advancing innovative clean energy solutions that are also affordable and accessible to all.

T&D Monitoring and Diagnostics Engineer

Summary

This position will report into the corporate Engineering & Design organization and be based in Tualatin, Oregon at the Integrated Operations Center with a hybrid work-schedule. The position resides in the Monitoring & Diagnostics (M&D) Engineering team who is responsible for the following programs: chemistry, vibration, lubrication, maintenance optimization, real-time condition/performance monitoring, Aveva PI system operational support (mobile rounds, integrations, and corporate governance).

The Pacific Northwest experienced a multitude of weather events over the past few years ranging from a catastrophic ice storm, large wildfires, and extreme heat. Because of these events, it’s critical now, more than ever, that PGE adapt to have better operational visibility, and management, over the real-time condition of our grid assets to understand how to better optimize our grid for a more flexible and stable performance. The M&D team is challenged to help solve this problem. More specifically, the T&D M&D Engineer will be tasked with building upon a mature generation-focused M&D function to reduce operational risk for T&D assets. A T&D M&D roadmap exists and includes a multi-year strategy which identifies the assets we plan to monitor, what technology we plan to deploy, what data we can leverage, and what processes need to be developed. Assets that will be monitored, or evaluated for monitoring, include bulk & distribution substation transformers, breakers, reclosers, distribution service transformers, underground cable, line-fault-detection devices, underground-fault-prediction algorithms, power quality, distributed standby generation/transportation electrification/distributed energy resource assets such as Battery Energy Storage systems, and potentially PGE-owned solar assets.

The primary function of the T&D M&D Engineer is to work with internal stakeholders to implement the monitoring function for T&D assets over the coming years. This engineer, along with the rest of the M&D team, will develop use cases for monitoring, review data availability, and form plans to either install new sensors or monitors along with creating models and data displays to depict asset condition. Additionally, this engineer will continuously improve upon the processes implemented to inform operations and maintenance teams of asset issues as they arise via improved alarm management. As needed, the position will provide support for root cause analysis investigations for equipment failures and recommend optimization of maintenance and inspection programs based on data.
